I just heard the North Charleston Fishing Club is closing up. It is the area next to what used to be the Hess Terminal on Virgina Ave.
Makes fishing the Cooper much harder.

THIS IS TO INFORM YOU THAT EFFECTIVE February 14, 2014 THERE WILL NO LONGER BE THE NORTH CHARLESTON FISHING CLUB. PLEASE LET ME KNOW THAT YOU RECEIVED THIS EMAIL.
There is a landing at the park under the bridge. I have never used it, but is it sufficient to use to access the cooper or is the park a security risk for your truck/trailer?
A bad day fishing is much better than a good day at work.
I have parked there several times when going out with a friend launching from the now closed ramp. I always felt a little uneasy as I usually parked it at first light. Whenever I returned, my car was always there with all 4 tires and no problems.

You would think with the hundreds of new boats sold each year in chas area alone, that with the additional new tax income along with the existing that a new ramp could be built somewhere.
I would not use that ramp. All of them are a gamble, but that one looks to be sketchy.
There was going to be one at the end of the old Navy base. but the tug boat operators shut it down. I don’t know the reason but I just remember something about the tug boat people.Maybe tugted can add to this…
Fishb8 the supposedly ramp that was going to be built at the south end of the Navy Base was vetoed by the ship terminal on the other side of shipyard creek. Said there would be too much boat traffic in there for the tugs and the ships. I think it had something to do with the ports authority and the building of a bridge across the creek for the trucks to move containers.

No, the money designated for new ramps went to dredging the city marina. SMH!
I have been using Gator park for 20 years, never had anything stolen. We even got the mayor to put in a street light over the ramp for when we go gigging. The flip side is that there is very little overhead clearance during high tide because of a railroad bridge and very little water at low tide. I can access it fine in my Carolina skiff, but you will have difficulty in a deep V.

What does the club closing have to do with a boat ramp ??
The NCFC is(was) just a Boat Ramp Membership that used to be within the Hess terminal on Virginia Av. They sold the terminal earlier this year, Hess is trying to get out of the wholesale market and focus on the retail end. The new company does not want the public to access the same area, I'm thinking it is a Homeland Security issue, but that is just a guess. The City of North Charleston knows that we need another boat ramp that is more accessible. I have heard that there are plans to remove the rail bridge at the Virginia Av boat ramp (public ramp.)

I can see it now, they remove the rail bridge and put in a floater along the bank to make it easier to deal with the boat without hitting the rocks. Then look out, 20 trucks and trailers in that small arsed area. Sorry folks, gonna have to back in from the street. Paul is right though. Low tide you better have a flat bottom boat with VERY shallow draft. I went out with a high tide in a 14’ McKee and played he!! coming back on a low or just past low tide. Got hung up on the mud bar in 2 different spots.
