North Chuck Fishing Ed

So, I’ve had some time on my hands. What I’ve found myself doing is observing local fisher people at local ramps.

What I want to do is start an outreach program for those that are actually putting a line in the water for dinner for their families. I’ve got plenty of money and time to supply tackle, bait, advice. But, I can’t do this alone. I know this is a stretch for a lot of you guys. However, it could be hugely beneficial for you and your family. I can’t count how many kids I have seen just waiting for dad to land a fish.

I’m even wiling to pay for licenses if need be. I really think this could be a good cause.

I know I sound like a dem… Couldn’t be more wrong for those wondering.

Input requested.

I’ve done it when I’m pier fishing. If i catch and it’s a keeper I’ll usually give it to who ever is there fishing for their dinner. They couldn’t thank me enough! Just helping out your fellow man.

Aqua, I appreciate the generosity. Just not exactly what I’m talking about. Those of us that have boats, and catch just to catch. Sport fishing if you will. Taking time away from that. I’m sure I’m way out on a limb here. Prepared to be blasted.

North;
If you want to see appreciation on the faces of the ones your helping, volunteer your boat/time/resources to the MAD Charleston chapter. The expression of gratitude from our nations heros is unmatched and you’ll have a blast doing it. This years event is in Nov. Should we post Skineej , Bonzo or Dfreedoms number at the boat landings ? just what are you asking people to do and how would they get in touch with the ones wanting this service ?

I get what you’re trying to say, but, that is what motivates people to work harder for what they want. There is a cartoon that shows a young guy getting a row boat…next picture is a runabout…then a cruiser…last one he’s back in a row boat as an old man. BOAT-break out another thousand.
Those folks at the boat ramp are happy doing what they’re doing. Don’t have to load/unload a boat/fix it when it won’t start/fill it with fuel/pay the taxes…
Some of the best times in my life were spent with my Dad standing on the pier in Panama City and sleeping in our station wagon. Less is more.

I know what you are saying and I generally do just that. When I pull up to the dock and open the livewell with some nice keepers, I give them to those who are fishing the dock with little chance of catching what I can. I also notice that by doing this, the regulars have their lines pulled in and out of my way by the time I pull up and often help secure the boat. It’s the little things people appreciate.

One Simple Thanks!!

NorthChuck said nothing about wanting to see appreciation from anybody. Unless I am wrong, he/she is suggesting a program to facilitate feeding less fortunate families through fishing. I think it’s a great idea, and I’d be willing to help in whatever way I could.

I often give some or all of my fish to people fishing at the boat ramps. Most of them at the ramps I frequent are poor people and subsistence fishing to feed their families. They even look hungry, and will keep and eat almost anything. Some of them will eat mud minnows. I’m neither poor nor hungry and when I see people like this, they get my fish.

NCT; I didn’t mean or intend to hijack your topic/thread;;sorry.

frigate;
I knew exactly what NCT was alluding to and whole heartedly agree in doing it. My point was/is to get volunteers to help provide another
group ;; “our nations heros”</font id=“red”> with a display of appreciation from the ones benefiting from their sacrifice. They serve so that we can enjoy the freedoms you so enjoy, and do so freely, sometimes at a very high cost… Even the ones NCT advocates helping are also recipiants of their service!!!

I guess I missed the point. I thought you wanted to take people that were fishing at the ramps...fishing. How did these folks get to the ramp...walk? I believe this is a case of "wealth guilt". With all the assistance programs in this country...if folks are "hungry", it's because their assistance money was "spent" on bottled water. The "poor" in this country have more support than the people that defend this country...and if they got time to go fishing...they got time to find some kind of work...

WTFF? “Wealth Guilt??” Jesus, I knew this would turn into this.

Just because I have money that I am willing to spend on EDUCATING my neighbors…

Seriously bro??

DO ME A FAVOR AND DON’T MOVE YOUR FINGERS WHEN YOU SEE ANYTHING OF MINE ON THIS SITE. PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

To everyone else that offer good input. This is something that is obviously a different way of thinking for some. However, I do think there is something here.

I’ve spent a lot of time soul searching and have some to the realization that I would like to help those those that aren’t as fortune as me, aren’t as fortune as most on this site, aren’t as fortune as probably most of this membership knows.

I knew as soon as I put it out there that I would get blasted by someone that believes “EFF you if you don’t want to work hard enough to buy a boat.”

I’ll leave it there, obviously a horrible idea. Post will be edited tomorrow.

Big Thank You to all that understood my goal. I will continue to live in this special part of the world that I was born, and continue to try to help those that are less fortunate than me.

Maybe I am too rich for my own good chief.

I’ll thank you back. I always try to help those less fortunate than I am. We are not rich by any standards, just comfortable, nor do I have any wealth guilt. When I see somebody who obviously needs some help, I give it if I can. When I see a family of 5 hovering around one man with one POS fishing rig or maybe a couple of hand lines, and all hoping he’ll catch them something for supper, and all skin and bones, I’ll give them supper, and my left over bait, and maybe a decent rod to fish with. That’s just me. I’ve got plenty of food in the freezer. Some of these people don’t even have a pot to pee in.

It never hurts to help somebody.

In spite of having a couple of beers, I choose to respond now.

I stand by everything I posted.

NorthChuckTiger, I’ll never respond to another of your posts per your request that was in CAPS and was I suppose yelling. You asked for “input”:
“Input requested”

I replied in essence that people fishing on the bank were happy where they were. I misunderstood your point, which is to feed the poor.

I never said EEEF anybody.

"I knew as soon as I put it out there that I would get blasted by someone that believes “EFF you if you don’t want to work hard enough to buy a boat.” "

I said:
“I get what you’re trying to say, but, that is what motivates people to work harder for what they want.”

Fishing is a leisure activity unless it’s your job, or, you’re that desperate to feed your family. As far as eating Mud Minnows, that’s desperate. When I stood on that pier in Panama City and saw boats trolling the bar off that pier…I wanted to do that.

I did it and do it today. I used to come back to Chimney Creek dock where the “poor” were paying $1 to fish off the dock. I’d pass out what I wasn’t going to eat that night. So what?

What set me off was Frigates’ comment:

“NorthChuck said nothing about wanting to see appreciation from anybody. Unless I am wrong, he/she is suggesting a program to facilitate feeding less fortunate families through fishing. I think it’s a great idea, and I’d be willing to help in whatever way I could.”

I say what “gail wins” represents is a more productive use of my priorities. I thought you wanted to take “poor” people fishing…my mistake.

“Aqua, I appreciate the generosity. Just not exactly what I’m talking about. Those of us that have boats, and catch just to catch. Sport fishing if you will. Taking time away from that. I’m sure I’m way out on a limb here. Prepared to be blasted.”

NCT, I’m not fully following what your goal is here.
Do you want to give them bait, tackle, and advice?
Do you want to take them fishing with you in your boat?
Do you want to give them the fish you caught?

It’s pretty common for boaters to give their left over bait away at the docks.
I give away my catch when I want.

Although it sounds nice to take people on the boat, I don’t do it. I too have put some thought into this situation, specifically with our active duty members hanging around bushy park. Each time, I realize that I do not know these people or their backgrounds and they do not know me. I don’t know if they will attempt to harm me or steal from me or how they would react if there was a situation, worse of all what if there is a bad accident.

It’s all about liability and coming home safe.

I think the best we can do is save your bait and ask anyone at the ramp if they need it before tossing it over the side. If you have more than you need, give away some of your catch.

To me this is an acceptable gift because bait and fish are caught, not purchased. There is no pity or wealth guilt associated with fish or bait like there would be with purchased items.

Both parties walk away whole.

NCT,

Good on you for wanting to do something to help out your fellow man.

I know I sound like a dem… Couldn’t be more wrong for those wondering.

And regarding your above statement, it’s the exact opposite of what a lib would say. The lib wants you to give 'em a fish; the conservative won’t give it to you, but he’ll teach you how to catch your own…

NCT, the goal is unclear as many people have stated but the idea reminded me of two scenarios/stories.

First is when a young athlete that has come up from a dirt poor family and lifestyle hits it big. He sees money for the first time ever and buys Mama a mansion. The house is paid off and he doesn’t think about taxes, maintenance or the power bill that she can’t afford. A couple years go by and injuries and age catch up and he can’t pay for all the houses and toys and finds himself broke again.

I’m going to paraphrase this story a bit too… So a man is on a vacation to the islands and he’s taking in all the sights. One morning he sees a fisherman pull in his catch. The man goes down to inspect the catch and talk to the fisherman. The fisherman tells him that’s all he needs for the day and will spend the rest of the day at the beach with the family. The man says he should stay out there longer and catch more fish so he can sell them to the local market. Then after a while he can buy a better boat and catch more and more fish. Soon he can buy more boats and sell to a cannery. After a couple more years buy the cannery. After many years he can retire and go fishing from the beach all day. The fisherman, with a confused look, reminds the man that he already goes fishing from the beach all day.

The perceived problem you’re seeing may not be a problem at all. It could be free/cheap way to spend an a day with the family. If you do give something to someone give them something they can use and they won’t have to maintain. Maybe a canoe/kayak with a hand trailer. Don’t be surprised if you see the gifts for sale later either.
