Well since the worst day fishing is still better than work I decided to fish the high tides this weekend. On Saturday I was out on the flat at sunrise. It was 40 degrees, the wind was blowing and it was cold. I did end up seeing one fish tailing after about 1 1/2 hours, and I was able to cast to it and catch it. I saw two other fish while I was out, but not long enough to even get another cast in. All in all considering the weather a nice day on the flat. I did’t get a picture of this fish but I got one of two otters crossing the flat I was on.
I talked my friend Jack into going out on Sunday in his flats boat, and wouldn’t you know it it was colder, and even more windy. I again was able to catch one fish on the high tide tailing, and saw two others, although they two others that I saw could have been the same fish. I caught the first one:
And the second hit at and missed my fly.
We explored the rest of the morning until about two hours from low tide, then started fishing some low tide spots. The wind was so bad poling the boat was a real issue. We basically went where the wind took us. We each caught one small one this way. We then went to another spot, where we had no luck, but while we were there I saw the water just erupting at the mouth of a small cove. The water was so low that I had to get out and pull the boat, but we made it to an exposed oyster rake that the fish were just beyond. I mandage to catch one over 27 inches, and Jack and I each got one in the 22 inch range:
