Now What ?

Had a great experience Sunday. Pulled the Galcier Bay out of the slip at Breach Inlet. The tide was rolling in as only it can at Breach. Went to make a hard over turn and the steering went out. AHHHHHHHH! Scrambled to get the hook out and saved the day after much panic. Just missed the boats docked up the creek.

I replaced the helm four years ago. Why would this happen again so soon? When I went hard over to starboard it would freeze there. The wheel would spin and nothing. Then it would catch and work fine. I put some fluid in but it didnt solve the problem. We limped back to the dock making wide turns so it wouldnt stick. Cleaned pants out and went home.

Possibly low on fluid? When you turn all the way in one direction, you’re pushing most of the fluid into one side of the cylinder… possibly running the helm dry?

If fluid was low, then it went somewhere. Fill it AND BLEED the air out of it. You can probably find the proper bleeding instructions on the internet. If that doesn’t do it, maybe the pump is shot.

Mine was doing something similar…but not as extreme. Was low fluid. Had it filled and bled and works like a champ.

If at first you don’t succeed, drink another beer!!!
