nu canoe

I was at higher ground in Beaufort this week and the salesman wasn’t very helpful so anyone have any input on the nucanoe for fishing any info would be appreciated thanks jcm.

The only canoe I had was an Old Town Guide. It was a great to paddle and fish from. Really stable, could stand and site fish from it, made decent speed and carried anything I put in it. Down side to it was even in the lightest winds, I could not control the canoe. It was to much of a sail to be controlable. That is why I went back to fishing from a kayak. Other than that, it was a great canoe.

JCM, if I’m not mistaken, the Nucanoe rep for this area has a screen name on here. I can also let you talk to a distributor for nucanoe that can really tell you how the thing paddles. I asked about them and ended up talking for 30 minutes. I am going to take one for a paddle sometime this summer sincec the store I deal with has two demo’s, a 12 and 14 ft. pm me for contact info.

Hello Guys…Newbie in this website and forum, but will be spending more time in here due to my daughter and family moving from TN to the South Park area of Charlotte, NC a couple of weeks ago!!

Wanted to chime in some comments about the NuCanoe, since a good buddy, Bucky, was the S.E. USA sales manager for several years and I hosted 2 Intro/Demo Days for him down here in JAX, and fished with him pretty often.
(1) The NuCanoe is a very versatile hybrid/crossover mixture of a canoe and a kayak, and they fits many fishing and hunting styles. Here is the link to their website:
http://www.nucanoe.com/

(2) I “sold” several for him for unique applications…a 400# guy who wanted to take his son fishing (he paddled it 50 yards and then stood in it and paddled!!), a guy who wanted to duck hunt with his two 90# Labs onboard, several flyfishermen who wanted to stand and sightfish for redfish, and several people who wanted to make use of its built in trolling motor bracket and battery compartment!!

(3) Originally, it was VERY HEAVY, but they have put it on a diet and now it appears to be about what the other “hybrids” weigh…maybe a little more. That was about the only issue that I had with it. Now, it is still a “niche” craft, but a VERY good one and you can customize it with many options to fit your hobby or sport.

(4) There are two dealers in S.E. SC and one in the Greenville area, and their “Team NuCanoe” has a guy from Aiken and another from Matthews, NC, and it has always sold well in the GA, TN, SC areas.

Do I have one…or…do I sell them?? NOPE!!
Actually, I kayak fish in a W/S Tarpon 120 with over 600 trips on it, and I work P/T here in JAX at a family owned “Outfitters” which specializes in 9-10 kayak brands, SUP (Stand Up Paddleboards), and all the high end shoes, clothing, hiking and camping gear, etc.
Tight Lines to all…JohnYaksJax

JohnYaksJax - Welcome to the site! I am on JKF site a lot (mostly lurking) and know of you from there. That site is great with a bunch of supportive folks there. Its a little more “raw” on here but still a good site also!

Hey Optiker…That nice welcome was very kind of you, and I appreciate it since I am trying to learn some places to fish on my upcoming trips to Charlotte, NC now that my family is there…daughter, SIL, and 2 Grandkiddos with another on the way!!

Was up in Fayetteville, GA and then Charlotte for 8 days and just got home to JAX on Friday…wish now that I would have jumped in here and made some “friends” to break up the road trip with some fishing…I will always have the yak and some gear on my trips, so I will let you know…OK???

Thx again…and thanks again for the nice comments!!
JohnYaksJax

PS: With you in Summerville and with YakontheFly and Nubby and Trey and others closeby, I can see a “yakfishing road trip” on my next trip to Charlotte!!

Tommy “TooBusy” is my neighbor and yakking mentor up here! My main client for work is in JAX and I am there a lot. I usually stay on JAX beach and one of these days I need to strap the yak on the truck and give FL a try!

Opti-
You need to do the 6 mile float up Guana Lake sometime when you’re down that way. Great trout fishing down there.

Optiker…Small world, huh?? Dunno if you could have a better mentor up that way than Tommy, and I am looking forward to meeting him and fishing with him too!!

Please let me know when your next JAX trip will be, but I am basically “retired” except for that P/T gig at Black Creek Outfitters, and I only work WED and SAT and SUN, so hopefully we can do some fishing on your next trip down here!!
Does your contact/client fish at all?? I only have one kayak right now, but I am pretty certain that I can “borrow” one if we need one for your client!!
Also, betting that you stay at the Marriott or Fairfield Suites at Jax Beach…??..only 6 blocks from my place and it is a nice place to stay!!

Too Busy…I was “scheduled” to fish Guana River (south of the dam) today, but did not, but I can take Optiker on his next trip down here…it can be a VERY NICE place to fish, altho it has been quiet for several weeks now…Guana Lake is “drawn down” to kill the weeds now, and without rain and this 90+ degree heat, the fish have had lockjaw!!
There are normally some “arm length” trout and bruiser reds and black drum in there!!
JohnYaksJax

JYJ - that would be sweet. You nailed it…Fairfield Ha ha. One of my client friends lives in Neptune Beach and we can sometimes be found at Carribbee Key  Will try to schedule an extra day and line something up with you - with advance notice of course. Thanks again

Hey John, Im in the charlotte area, i shot ya an email, get at me!

Adam

Hello Adam!!
Got your email fine and will reply later tonite!!
Thanks for your info and I will keep you posted on my trips up to Charlotte…are you anywhere near the “South Park” area?? The roads nearby were Sharon, Quail Hollow, Carmel and Fairview…??
I fished in Lake Wylie last WED and I have Col. Francis Beatty Lake near Pineville targeted for next trip, but I wanna get to York County, SC and both the Broad River and the Catawba River ASAP!!

Optiker…This is all WAY too funny!! My daughter and family always stay down at the Fairfield Inn, and my lady friend from Tampa does the same when she visits!! Coolest thing is that you can walk across the street to the Marriott Oceanfront and show them your Fairfield key and you have FULL priviledges there…PLUS the ocean!!

BTW…Carribbee Key is on a VERY NICE intersection!! Across the street in Atlantic Beach is Ragtime with great seafood, JAX’s first in house brewery, live music, and GREAT scenery…if you get my drift!! On the East is Ocean One for more ambiance and the Seahorse Motel with the Lemon Bar for oceanfront relaxation and even better “scenery”…LOL!! C’mon down!!
JYJ

I live in York county, Lake Wylie actually, 20 minutes from South Park, the Broad was going to be one of my suggestions, not sure of that lake in Pineville, i fish Wylie alot, mainly tournaments out of bass boats this time of year would be tough from a yak except for late at night as the bass stay pretty deep during the day…good smallie fishing in the Broad though! I may need to get me a kayak…

Hey Guys…that old “small world” saying is really true!!

FishOn06…That is amazing stuff and you must know and patronize Ken Ponder who owns Lake Wylie B&T!! He and I met last Spring by chance and he told me that he was building it, and it is a REALLY nice place with LOTS of good gear…well, it has a little LESS gear than it had when I was there last WED…and that gear is now in JAX!!

After chatting with Ken for a couple of hours, I launched right there at the public ramp and went out in the lake and then out to the right and under the bridge…not many coves to hide in and fish and WAY TOO MANY ski boats and jetskis, but the bridge is a No Wake Zone and I actually had some hits on my flyrod. Got “skunked” but just need to explore more…and need to get you to take me out or tell me some spots…LOL!!
I have Annual Non-Resident licenses now for both NC and SC, so I am good to go just about anyplace close…hope we can make it out someplace on my next trip up there!!
Thanks again…JohnYaksJax
PS: We have LOTS of used kayaks for sale every week in our JAX kayak website:
http://www.jaxkayakfishing.com/phpBB/classified.html

Let me know if you are really interested and I will keep my eyes open for good deals for you…
Also, I work P/T at a kayak dealer and outdoors outfitter so I am “pretty involved” in the kayak community

I work there!
Whered you meet ken?
