I know we have a good amount of members who are current/former military so I wanted to ask if anyone has ever shrimped at the Naval Weapons Station whether it’s off one of the piers or near one on the banks of the Cooper River. I’m am not military but do have access to the Weapons Station for work, just curious if it’s worth giving it a try. Thanks in advance for any info and thanks for what you do to any current/former military on CF.
I don’t think you’ll be able to find a good location. I’ve never specifically tried shrimping anywhere on the NWS - I’ve occasionally caught a few shrimp while cast netting mullet off the fishing pier near the golf course, but there just aren’t many places to get access to the mud and creeks. Most of the accessible areas are built up with docks, rocks, pilings, etc.
I know they are in that stretch of river, but probably not enough big ones to make it worthwhile. You can go to the Bushy Park boat ramp any low tide (especially at night) and catch plenty of bait shrimp, but haven’t seen many with much size to them.
I don’t know all the areas that fishing is allowed, it’s mostly off the piers but if you can find somewhere to get down to the edge of the grass at the southern end of the base you might have a shot. Check with the Outdoor Adventure center, they can at least tell you where you’re allowed to go. Need a base license, $7 I think.
let us know how it goes if you decide to give it a try!

Lots of small shrimp!
What’s your definition of small? 41-50, salad shrimp, creek shrimp, etc? I don’t like the terms colossial, jumbo, etc. 26/30 is the ideal size for me. I know I’m not going to catch 26/30’s anywhere up the Cooper River from the harbor, but what size am I looking at? Thanks.

it would be a WAG for me to put a count on them, but I’d say “creek shrimp” is about right.

50-60ct and up
Yea, I’m going to give it a try if I can find a good spot on post. Also, going to try up the Cooper prolly a little down from the VA Boat Ramp. With a little one on the way, that area is a little closer than going all the way to the coast. I’d rather have creek shrimp than no shrimp, and other than peeling them, creek shrimp are pretty good. I’ll let y’all know how it goes.

fish today work tomorrow
during the mid to late 80’s we use to shrimp off to the side of the boat ramp behind the fire station. We would bait the ramp and the whole area to the left of the ramp. A normal night would produce a full garbage can. This was before the baiting laws, and I think it was around October. The shrimp were decent size browns (36/40). I haven’t been back there since I got out of the Marines in 88’

I remember that!!
We use to catch HUGE Stripers off peir Bravo, and jumbo Croakers on the north end of warf Alpha. There were always big redfish and flounder along the rocks between peir Bravo and the boathouse…I miss fishing there!

After spending 20 years in the Army , I have been informed that I cant fish on the NWS . Now civilians can if they work on base because they have a background check done. Heck I had a top secret clearance, do they think I might blow up the base ? Give me a break !.
I DONT HAVE A BOAT
