Just for fun I’d like to take my son out to try to find some octopus one day. I don’t know if you have to go out to the jetties for a chance at one of these (can’t do that in my boat), or if you can do it inshore at places like Folly River or the ICW (where i can definitely put in my boat).
Mostly I want to try this for the novelty of it. Hopefully I’ll net up a few squid at some point to show my son.
Any suggestions? I’m not finding much online for help.

years ago, where there were a few old oyster rakes uncovered on the front beach of Morris Island, we found an octopus nestled up in an old dead shell…was about 6" long and cool as hell…I had a saltwater aquarium at the house and he lived for a few months…
um not sure if bulls bay is considered inshore but but i jacked this picture from Charleston Oyster Company facebook page was taken December 10th in bullsbay. they said it was alive.
there picture caption: “Look at this!! Our crew saw this octupus on the bank while they were out oystering yesterday. They said it was a big one, like 4 feet!”

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.
they have been fished commercially here in Beaufort and fripp island recently. They seem to be more prevalent in the ICW in the winter. All you need are habitat traps with no bait. fish them around sea walls, rocks or oyster beds. This is a commercail trap made from corragated plastic pipe

So if the winter is the ticket for the ICW, I’ve missed the boat. Is it just a winter-only thing, or a “winter most likely” thing?

I know that this sounds unbelievable and I’m still unsure, but a good friend of mine swears that he and a friend found a live octopus in the Wateree River near the base of the Lake Wateree dam.

but not completely ruling it out…i guess anything is possible? but the wateree is so far from the coast and octopodi are so sensitive to their environment thats why i lean towards not believing that (not to be rude)

Bizarre foods did an episode from savannah. Had a guy trapping octopus. They used lemon juice to get octopus out of tube. I did not know there was a fishery for them until I watched it. I want to eat a local octopus now.

When I was little living in Florida, Dad used to catch them dragging for scallops. After one bit a chunk out of my thumb, I learned to be careful playing with them.
We used to catch a bunch of sea-horses too. Do we have those inshore off our S.C. coasts?
Fred, yes there are seahorses out here but I have never personally caught one (I don’t pull nets or anything commercial).
There will be no octopus in Wateree, they cannot survive freshwater. They have a very sensitive vascular system that even brackish water wreaks havoc on.

I have a real hard time believing it myself, but he swears that its true. I laughed at him and asked if he knew what an octopus looked like. Some of those rednecks from Lugoff will make you wonder sometime .

I know just what you mean. Does this guy also know about the catfish up near the dam that was big enough to eat the divers that the company sent down to investigate a blocked turbine?

There again, he swears that he had one up beside his boat, but it was too big to bring in so he let it go.

I’m an old man and have heard tales about the huge catfish that live below the dams all my life. The first time I heard it, the giant catfish were living at the bottom of Pickwick dam on the Tennessee River, the last dam on the TVA system. Them huge cats shore do move around
