Odd question, duck hunt from yak?

Really wanting to try it this year. Got a couple spots up river that are loaded with woodies but not easy to access by boat. Kayak would be perfect. Have a 12ft future beach angler which is a barge but stable. Can easily stand and cast my fly rod. Anyone have a setup on the yak for waterfowl? Tell me this isn’t crazy.

I have done it, but I learned the hard way that you have a very limited angle of swing; from straight in front to about 45 degrees to the left (for right handers). Otherwise you might take a dip in the drink.

What I usually did was simply use the kayak/canoe to get to a spot, then get out, but I did jump shoot some. Jump and pass shooting from the kayak/canoe is a little tricky.

I did finally decide to go to a 20 ga. when shooting from the kayak or canoe.

I’ve been researching it myself…I bought a olive-colored kayak just for this purpose, figuring it would be easier to camouflage. Might give it a go this year during waterfowl season.

I do it. Theres nothing fancy about it. Paddle, gun, shells, cooler. Its not pretty either!

We have sold a # of kayaks to be used for Duck Hunting over the past few years

This year Malibu came out with a Duck Hunting Camo-very popular

As for the how to - I never have hunted from a kayak

I hunt the Cooper and lake during the season all the time , it lets me get into places that i can’t reach with my War Eagle.

Thanks for the input. My yak is olive green so should be easy to camo. I have found some ducks scouting on my end (myrtle beach) but it is way hard to get to by jon boat. We spent more time walking the boat over sand bars and logs to make it worth it. Everywhere had about 12" of water or more so a kayak would be perfect. Anyone have some camo ideas? Just some burlap maybe? Doubt I will take any decoys, probably jump shoot or sit and wait with a call.

spray paint. I hunt out of mine too. but like the hog says the swing is short. if you try to shoot from 90 degrees or better it will roll you worse than the widow maker out of tk and mike. The ducks cant see you as long as you cover up everything shiny like rivets and such. Also works (**() good for drifting shooting squrrels.

I am going to make a dodger/cover out of some thin pvc for a frame and some of that 3D-leafy camo for my Pro Angler, to cover my legs and the pedals…I want to give it a shot this winter. I’ve got a few spots I think would be productive in the yak…

I use a camo burlap, tied up to the front and back with potato chip bag clamps. If the burlap is a couple inches in the water it creates a drag. I shoot 90 degrees and my shoulder kicks back, thats about it. No unstable issues. Only issue is shooting 90 to the left. The ducks are going to see you on the kayak regardless. You can beach the kayak and hide it better. Your only options are shooting fly bys, or shooting trash ducks that see you (and do not care). If you want quality ducks your going to have to land the kayak in some type of shrubbery and put out decoys. I have actually went out no camo and shot some ducks flying by. Point is, they’re going to see you unless your bringing 2 garbage bags full of vegetation to setup.but that defeats the whole purpose of going by kayak (simplicity). I’m down for a meet & blast, anyone else?

Like the Meet and Fish, 'cept with guns! I’m in!

My brother and I have it a go opening day. Got a hen and drake woody, so the yak hunting experiment was a success.

Congrats! Now I gotta give it a shot…
