Headed out last week with Mad Mike and Toothlessblue in search of the ever elusive shad. All fish were caught on a 7wt with a full sink line. Landing shad on the fly was a first for toothless and myself. It also resulted in a bruised back for Toothless and a bloody pinky knuckle for myself. Little did I know that catching your first shad on the fly subjects you to a rather harsh hazing ritual that leaves you an inch shorter and soaked.
The pictures were edited to protect locations.
Toothless:
Mike has a weird way of handling fish. He tried to teach us, but his methods made us uneasy:
BTW for those of you wanting to do this I suggest you keep your line in the water and not in the trees. I spent plenty of time hung up in the trees and I did not get a single bite while my fly was embeded in bark.

Wait a little while and the roe shad will be there. You will know when the season is hot because the Man will be there every day checking your catch. Not that I know where your secret shad fishing spot is.
Looks like you boys had a fun trip. Bait (fly) actually in the water. I’ll have to try that method.
I can’t wait to get home and be able to wear short sleeves outside again. I haven’t caught a shad since I was a wee lad, and have never specifically targetted them. I’ll be home next week and want to give it a shot.
Pillage and plunder with a 9wt and a fist full of clousers.
I’m in the market to buy a smaller flats style boat and I was curious what brand/type of boat is in the pics? What price range is it in? </font id=“Arial”></font id=“Arial”>
Nice fish guys looks like you had a blast if you think you had fun with that 7wt you need to tryem with a 3wt i got a few places where they dont hold as deep so you can get away without using a sinking line if you use heavily weighted flies and a longer leader
