Off The Rocks At The Dam

Not much to report.

Pulled into the parking lot last evening about 7:30 and there was some bait just off the rocks. Casted into them and hooked a fish on the 2nd cast, but lost it about half way in. They moved on shortly after that and I landed one just blind casting.

Could see some other schools of bait, but they were down past the parking lot and I didn’t feel like walking all the way down there on the rocks in flip flops. Saw one nice big pod of bait straight out that started moving in, but just about when they got to the marker the stripers pounced on them before they got within casting range.

Stopped by again as I passed on my way to work this morning and casted a bit. No bait visable. Had one fish blow up on my plug and I missed it, but that was it.

I was there at lunch today and there were a ton of small bream and bass, more than I’ve seen this year. I saw some small groups of herring, but no big concentrations. I was hoping some bigger herring would move in, but it looks like we are going to have to wait for these ones to grow. There are usually some bigger herring on murray.

We should see some larger ones in a month or so on sabiki rigs.lol… is it me or has the population of herring on Murray been growing very well. Seems like they are everywhere and used to be pretty concentrated in areas. That could be why we we are seeing more smaller baits, but then again we are still early on the spawn, could see the bigger ones move in to the rocks and towers in a month or so.

I want to try a little dam fishing from the rocks this year. It sould like we coming up on trying, and you guys have had a little success already. When would be the best time to try, moring, evening, cloudy days, all of the above? Thanks,

Can I borrow your towel? My car just hit a water buffalo.

I pass by on my way to and from work, so I’ve been stopping in alot. There has definately been more activity over there in the evenings. Go with low expectations for sure. I do it more to unwind after work than to expect to catch many fish. There’s alot of things that have to work out just right. I have seen days with no bait there at all…or lots of bait and no fish schooling or hitting my plug when I drag right through the bait…and even when they are schooling they may not be within casting range. Also, each time they come up close you normally only get one fish each time as they will have moved by the time you land your fish. It’s a lot different than being able to follow them with a trolling motor.

Use a plug you can cast a long distance. Many times they will be close to the rocks, but it’s nice to be able to get out as far as possible when they are not.

I haven’t done it this year, but I have caught plenty of keepers there throwing cut bait off the rocks too. That’s worth a try as well.

Good luck!
