Sounds like these things are all over lately, running all up on people’s property and stuff.
I’ve always known they were around the rocks at the dam, but never gave much thought to trying to catch any till now. Considering picking up a trap to leave overnight at the dam on my daily commute to work.
Anyone ever tried to trap them?
They trap the heck out of them in La. I bet they would be great bait for the stripers. They use lobsters in New England and catch some nice ones! I’ll bet there are some plans on Google for a super trap. Good luck, let us know how you work out.
I’ve caught them on Murray. We pulled up to one of the islands on the lower end. The beach was full of them. Needless to say the striper all had full bellys of them.
Tim, a couple of days before the LEO fishing derby, I was doing some reconnaissance work and caught a flathead. That thing puked up some pieces of a partially digested crawfish that was WAY, WAY bigger than any I’ve ever seen around here. It was HUGE! Im sure you can catch some. Go get em and let us know how you do.

Thanks guys for the info. I stopped by Sportsmans for a trap, then Publix for a hand full of shrimp. Just set up for the night.
Indonesian, farm raised, previously frozen shrimp. Hope they’re not picky eaters. LOL

I got about 20lbs after the storm and cooked them, they were huge and tasted great.
Let me know when the crawfish boil is.

ive spent alot of time trapping them this past year. primarily in the river. they are definitely NOT picky eaters. when considering bait, think of fishing for catfish. you want something that will slowly put off an oil trail for an extended amount of time. my two go-to’s are fresh caught brim and dog food. cut brim is best but takes time and effort to catch them, then dog-food works OK but if i dont have time or effort catch fresh, its always available and cheap. if you bought a standard minnow trap, you’ll want to cut the holes a little larger or you’ll only be getting smaller ones. also, try to always suspend your bait up. you will be AMAZED at how much those little bastards will eat if the food is on the bottom where they can easily get to it.

just curious, where did you get 20 pounds. thats a good haul. lake? river? off island? not asking for your specific spot, just curious as to the terrain type.

F’in Unbelievable!
Trap stolen on the first night.
I set it out after dark and was there at dawn. With were I set it, there’s no way anyone randomly ran across it. There was hardly anyone around and I didn’t think anyone was watching, but apparently I was wrong. Gonna have to find a more discrete spot.

Thanks. Yea, it is was a minnow type trap, but made for crawfish with oversized holes at the end.

Otters will steal the heck out of them. Your best bet is to tye it to the end of a tree in the water with black chord. In lake Murray I’d imagine that the slope on the bottom would allow it to fall if not tied off.

That never occurred to me and makes more sense since there was hardly anyone around. I’m picking up another today and will secure it better. Thanks

muskrats too. i actually had a small one spread the hole on one of my homemade traps and get inside. then it couldnt get out so it ended up drowning. i was confused as **** when i first pulled the trap up.
