Offshore 04/10

We went offshore saturday. It wasn’t the best forecast but we wanted to give it a try any way. I bought a 2001 Cape Horn 24OS with twin 150 optimax back in October, so I was itching to go out. We left IOP marina @ 6:30 and through the jetties at 7. We headed for the ledge beyond Comanche. It was a beautiful 35mph ride out. It got bumpy when we passed Commanche and by the time we got to 200feet we were ready to stop. We got the lines out at 8:45. Left outrigger went off at 9:30, had him for a minute then lost him. First fish in the boat around 11. It was a dolphin about twice the size of the ballhoo! We started trolling back toward home since it was pretty ---- rough. Got back toward Comanche and caught a bonita in 68 degree water. Shark got half of him, he came right up out of the water about 75 yards behind the boat. Headed to the house around 3 and got to the jetties at 5. It was a wet ride home.

NNE wind = wet ride home, good report; thanks…

“The big one’s still swimming, let’s go.”

how far past the commanche is the ledge you think ive heard all different answers, we fish mainly south towards the deli etc, just wonderin thanks, and good post

glad you caught some fish! More than I can say recently (landlocked with work)
Hows the Cape Horn ride? No better test than rough days, and I’ve heard mixed reviews so far with them…

We went to 200 ft and started trolling. That was roughly 17 miles past the Comanche. We went as far as 375 ft deep and we were 60 miles from the jetties. Brian

I bought this boat in October and have not been offshore til saturday. I live in Anderson (upstate SC) so I never got the chance to get to the coast. Anyway, I was quite impressed with the Cape Horn. My dad has a Regulator 23, so I know how a boat is supposed to take rough water. We came back in on 4-5 footers with some 6&7’s throwed in for good measure. They were coming out of the north with a 20-25 kt northeast wind. It was a wet ride back but I don’t know of a center console that would have been dry in those conditions. We still made from 24-28 mph. The best thing about this boat was the 150 mile trip and the 68 gallons of gas it took to fill up. Brian
