I don’t report much, but I know it is helpful for everyone to have a basic idea of what is going on before planning a trip.
We fished north and started at SW Banks. Fished around 150 ft and couldn’t get away from the bonito. We had 2 blackfins mixed in, but had to leave before running out of bait.
Trolled towards GT hole and stayed around the 180-200ft range and were able to avoid the bonito and managed 2 wahoo and 2 more blackfin. Wahoo were 30 lbs and estimated 40 lbs (bottomed out 35 lb scale). One of the blackfins was huge – also bottomed out the 35 lb scale. State record is 40 but I doubt it was that big.
Also went 0 for 2 sails in the morning while fishing in that 150 ft range.
Seems we went too far. Trolled around GT Hole Sunday morning with one tunny, 1 skippy, 1 cuda and a small blackfin to show for it. Got some cool stuff off the bottom, a huge queen trigger, couple of sandtiles and a creole fish along with the usual beeliners, triggers, porgies and pinkies. Beautiful day on the water.
We pulled 2 cedar plugs at first, one on flat line and other long. The long didn’t do much, but we couldn’t keep the bonito off the flat. Eventually took the plug off the long and replaced it with a blue/white islander since the other blue/white was doing well. All the blackfin and wahoo were caught on ballyhoo.
