Well it started off as a great morning. We started out on the ledge in 160ft looking for a wahoo. We got 3 wahoo bites and were able to boat 2 of them. They were in the 20lb range. Then in about 220ft. the shotgun got nailed by a blue. The lure that it ate was a test lure by Lehi Baits named the sasquitch. Basically it is a huge version of the squitch. It was all blue in color. So we fought the blue for over an hour on a 30w, and had it close to the boat a couple of times. It took another run and about 50-75yds from the boat a mako came out of nowhere and nailed our blue. It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen in my life. Then some how the hook came out of the blue and got in the side of the mako. That really pissed it off. We were able to get the mako close to the boat for a minute so I could my Sasquitch back, but it figured everything out and took off. Doing so it ran under the boat hit the boat with its tail and dorsal fin jumping completely out of the water on the other side. It hit the boat so hard that he took the gel coat off the bottom of the boat. He ended up cutting the line with his tail. Right after that mayhem, we got everything back out and were able to hook and release a sail on another proto type Lehi Bait. This one is a miniature chug head that they call the spooler. We stayed around in that area all day and had 2 more sailfish bites, one was on the spooler. We ended up catching 2 dolphin to. We fished until about 1 when we noticed the weather and did not want to get caught in that 50 miles out in a 23ft center console. We packed up and went home. All in all it was a great day. We fished the 315-340 line from 160-325ft. in 81.7 degree water. Russell those proto types are awesome. Yall are doing a great job. Keep it up man.
We had a trip out in May where we hooked 3 Makos - bringing the smallest, a 150’er boatside. I saw that crazy Mako’s eyes watching Cappy’s hands - and figured it wasn’t worth it, but he saved his $20 Islander (minus the hook).
Congrats on the day. Would have been nice to have gotten the blue released or at least some Mako Steaks!! Gotta get me some of those new lehi’s. Let me know if get your hands on a few. Tell Russell to givem up.
Congrats on an exciting day! Thats the thing I love about fishing offshore. You never know what is going to happen. I thought those gashes in your gel coat were from his teeth. You showed them to me at the JIYC. You say their from his tail? Man! That is some serious power right there. Glad you made it back in through the storm ok.

Thanks everyone it really was a great day. Yea we got rockville this weekend. We’ll be in touch about that. MP those markings marking were from that fishes body. It’s a couple hundred bucks of damage he caused. RedBull It would’ve been awesome to have some mako steaks. I’d had to have thrown him in your boat though. If I would’ve had a gun we pry could have done something with him. Anyways how did you end up your day? Oh yea I gotta show you the video.
