Offshore Aluminium

Quick question for ya’ll. Why do you not see many/any offshore aluminium boats down here or on the east coast period? Is it just a west coast thing? I really like the look of some of these boats…thanks.

Just a few big Jon boats at the near-shore reef - its a Northwest thing.

Thanks, Captain Ross

the aluminum boats you are talking about cost a whole lot more than an equivalent fiberglass boat. In the North West, the ability to bounce off of a rock(we don’t have many rocks like they do) with out punching a hole in the side of the boat outweighs the design advantages of fiberglass. Aluminum corrodes in the hot salt we have, up there, the water is a lot cooler and they have far less corrosion.I had a friend that built commercial boats out of fiberglass, wood, steel and aluminum. he told me aluminum was the best suited, but it cost a whole lot more to build.he built more boat out of wood than anything, made more money off the steel ones

Spareparts; You may be on to something there! If you had a fiberglass boat and dinged it up, you would have to put it inside a warm building to do the repair work. You can’t work with gel coat under 60 degrees, or so it says on the can?
