I know this is a SC site but, I wanted to share a fishing experience. My family and I were down in Weeki Wachee, FL last week for Spring break. I made friends with a really great guy that took me and my oldest son offshore fishing out of Hernando Beach, Fl on his Key West 23’ Walk-around. This was a first for both of us so we were really excited. I was worried about getting seasick but didn’t. We went out 30 miles (not sure if that is far or not but is seemed far) and it was only 50’ deep. We could not believe how calm it was and how clear the water was. We saw a huge Barracuda, a Mahi, turtles and what was either a Tarpon or really big King break water feeding on bait fish. We caught Red and Gag Grouper one after the other and even managed to land one King. Never having been offshore, I never saw the appeal over inshore but now that I have been, wow, it was truly different. Not sure if this is a typical day offshore but man, my arms actually got a little tired reeling. What a wonderful day on the water. My thanks to Rick for being such a great host/Captain.
My son had what we think was a King on the line but lost it.

Looks brown to me…in color that is. You guys are brave to go 30 miles offshore with someone you just met on a vacation not necessarily knowing what, if any, safety equipment he has on board.

I was a bit apprehensive but, he had 2 sonar/gps units, 2 vhf radios and an EPIRB. Boat was very clean and well maintained. Guy was former navy and has lived on the water all his life. Very safety conscious and just a super nice guy. I definitely have the bug but it will have to be satisfied inshore.
Besides, aren’t you basically doing the same thing when you go on an offshore charter? Unless you know the Capt. you are taking a chance. I have watched this guy post for a couple of years on another site and felt that he was a pretty good and responsible guy based on his posts.

yeah DF, I guess you could have went out with Floridaboy and his buttcrack buddies from Pelion and Redbank on a borrowed POS boat with no tow insurance and got dragged back in when that junker chit the bed. Good times.

Sounds like you made a good choice to me. Good job getting on the fish. Looks like a lot more fun than I’ve been having recently!

Boatless
You know me OH TOO WELL! That boats no more a POS than yours or the rest of them. Yea the lower unit went out but i’m sure it’s no the first motor to ever do that. Not sure where or when the gear got the crack in it but I do know when it went out. On top of that, we had tow insurance numb nuts. We didn’t have Sea Tow or Tow Boat US. But tow insurance, we did have. Got $1000 reimbursement. Needless to say though I won’t be taking that boat or anyone elses out again… I also see no need in buying a new offshore boat now with all the closures currently in place and the future being unknown. Gonna stick to the lake for now and fish with buddies offshore. Much more inexpensive.
