We fished straight out in 500-650ft on the 240 line. The water was 74-76 degrees. We got a late start do to a friend’s boat that was taking on water. We stayed with them until the Coast Guard was on scene and they made it back to the ramp with no problem.
We got lines in at 8:30am and then it was on and we stayed covered up all day. We got some incredible video of what a quadruple header looks like under water. The new Zman dredge on Titanium Cable arms with 48 indestructible baits raised a swarm of dolphin. They were yanking the baits and bumping into the camera! The new Marlin Mud flaps on the back of the squid chains with Islander chrome domes on top of them were awesome as well and raised a bunch of dolphin.
This trip we fished with 9/0 Eagle Claw circle hooks with Baitmasters pee wee and small/medium ballyhoos. In my opinion, the ballyhoo swim better, are easier to rig and catch more fish than J hooks. Not to mention that they always hook in the corner of the mouth and help release billfish unharmed. I can also carry a ton of bait in my cooler because there are no hooks or leaders coiled up. Also, we saw tons of hammerhead sharks and free jumping sharks. It seems like every year around 4/30 I see lots of sharks. In 2008 we had a shark steal half of a huge wahoo.

Can you send me a link to how you would rig a skirted ballyhoo with a circle hook? Glad you did well on Sunday. Most of the chatter on the radio sounded like 2 or three fish was the norm.

Kayak, SCUBA, or both.
I rig them with red floss and small weights. I use the X on the head method. Atlantic Game and Tackle has the floss and chin weights. I make a loop and pass the loop through the chin weight. Pass the loop over the ballyhoo’s head and secure it behind the gills. Rest the chin weight under the mouth and pass the knot that you made for the loop over the mouth. Pass each tag end though each eye, creating a X on the top of the head. Then do another overhand knot and pull each tag end until the knot tightens against the bottom of the mouth and cut the tag ends. Pass the circle hook horizontally or vertically through the X. I like passing the hook horizontally through the X.

Any man that doesn’t know how to catch a fish, shouldn’t disgrace a fish, by catching it.
nice catch and video.
glad to see no gaffs to the groin, hooks to the face or broken beer bottles.
get that kid a proper offshore life vest and let him reel in all the p-nuts.
it was really nice that you named your video after me and that in the midst of all that action- I was on all ya’lls minds. I really own a piece of you and your crew.

Why the bottle beer on the boat? A good mustang life jacket is what that kid needs. You can get a ticket for too big a jacket on a kid.

I figured this would come up. 1. I drink small Coronitas because they are delicious and I can down them in 25 seconds between bites. If Corona will switch to half cans I might consider a switch. 2. The boy has a correct fitting life jacket, but 8 year olds like to grab gear and try on stuff. That was not his life jacket and he happened to have it on when we hooked up.
What is the deal with bottles? I have never had an issue. Somebody should get on Scout for putting stained glass in the 28 Abaco. I’d figure that would blow out in the jetties, who knows.
