First, I want to say thanks to jpbatliner for his hospitality and opening his beautiful 25’ Sea Fox to us today. Thanks man, I owe you one.
We left the rocks just before 6 and got to our fishing spot about 8 or so. I wasn’t really paying attention. The ride, just as forecasted, big rolling swells, little to no chop. A rather nice ride out, considering what we thought the forecast was actually telling us. The ride back in was splendid. The day as a whole was much better than we thought it was going to be. Even a 20’ KW could have fished it!! LOL!! j/k.
Made it out to 300’ or so (saw 400’ at one point), in the vicinity of the 226/Editsto Banks area, trolled around weeds, other boats, a lot of flyers, and had nothing. Saw warm water temps from 77 to 78 or so out there. Lot’s of loose weed lines and clumps. A few weed induced knock downs that got our heart beating, but no fish.
Decided it was time to head back to shallower water. Heard on the radio someone saying they were on the fish in about 260’ or so. We pointed the boat in that direction and trolled toward that depth. We got to about 280’ and got our first knock down. I was elected to reel it in, so I grab the rod and start to bring in the fish. There’s not much fight, a slinger. As I can see color, I see that the whole stinkin’ school is with this little cow. So I stop reeling, tell the other guys what I see and they proceed to bring in the other lines so the bait is near my fish. BAM!! BAM!! two more on. We could have kept going but three of us with fish left only one to drive, clear lines, and so forth. Jpbatliner wasn’t having that, so let us reel the fish in while he did EVERYTHING else!! Three fish brought to the boat. As we are setting the spread back up I am getting the downrigger line reset. The line pops out of the clip while the weight is still out of the water. I thought I had screwed up my placement of the line in the clip. As I’m thinking that, the reel begins to scream … another fish on.
Thanks offshoreSC. In my short time doing this, I’ve never seen that many dolphin following one that was hooked up. Even though that was our only action, it was still really cool to play them like that to get more on the lines. A great couple of minutes that made the day well worth it.
Pretty sure you’re already aware of this, but next time have some 20-30 lb spinning outfits rigged with just a hook throw some ballyhoo chunks behind the boat to keep them happy and pitch chunks of ballyhoo on the spinners at the school and always keep at least one of the hooked fish in the water at the boat and the school will stay with you. You can pick off quite a few fish and it is a lot less work than having to rig and redeploy lines.
yup did this out of Wachapreague, VA. Got around 20 dolphin off of one lobster pot buoy. The secret was keepimg one on hook in the water at all times…kept his friends coming back

You guys are SOOOOOOO funny. Just because I don’t lick my hands after I cut up rotten squid don’t mean I don’t touch fish!
