Offshore Question

Hello all, I have been lurking around the site for some time now and have decided to join. I am originally from up North and have fished the Long Island Sound all my life so I have some knowledge and experience operating a boat. I have been living in Santee S.C. for the past 15 years and have fished Lake Marion on a 25 foot pontoon boat. I have also fished the Harbor a lot in my 17” Aquasport. I have recently purchased a 25” Crownline 250cr and would like to take it no further than 30 miles out (When I get comfortable) My question is can anyone tell me if that boat is a safe boat to take that far out? And if so is there anyone here interested in teaching me the ropes by allowing me follow them out so that I can get some experience offshore?

First call the USCG auxiliary and request a courtesy inspection of your vessel - its free and they will make sure you are sea worthy !

Thanks Natureboy, it is currently being repowered and should be done today. I will call them when it is finished.

Nothing wrong with taking the cruiser boats offshore but what exactly are you planning to fish for? I’ve trolled in the Keys with them before but I’m not quite sure it would be my cup of tea way offshore and definitely not for bottom fishing. Which engine does it have? With a 75gal fuel capacity keep that in mind. Being a heavy, big bodied boat I don’t know how good the fuel consumption is either. Keep in mind 30 miles out is still close to 40 miles from Remleys

Not me. That boat isn’t built for ocean conditions.

Florida_Boy2 I would like to hit some of the near shore reefs, that would probably be the extent of my offshore travels. That boat has a Merc 7.4 454 Bravo 3 and I was told it was getting about 3 to 5 mpg. I can not confirm that until I get it on the water.

Seen people do it and in my younger/stupid days done it too but no more , boats of that size/style off shore are magnets for trouble, sometimes deadly/dangerous. Keep it near/in-shore, plenty of fishing
in safer water , my 2cts

Just looked at a crownline - That’s what I call a “sofa boat” I would stay in the lake

You may want to check your fuel consumption on the lake before you go by those numbers and head offshore.

Not trying to be a smartass, but i geniunely want to know what is the purpose of taking a 25 foot or so cruiser offshore? Can’t fish off of it very well, and it’s not like it’s some big pleasure yacht with a hot tub and full service bar that you take across the ocean.

Can’t attest to that particular hull but many boats in that class are not built to handle offshore conditions, and are mostly built for fuel efficiency and not stability or wave/slicing ability because they are so bulky. Me peronally, you’d never catch me offshore in one. Because i would be either beat to death from the weather or bored to death because i couldnt fish off of it or do anything really but drive around and get really hot in the sun.

Millacd said my thoughts exactly. I’m not the most knowledgable on hulls and designs but from someone who grew up around these boats I never imagined them offshore. The most I imagine them offshore is going in and out of the intracoastal waterway going south. Like I said early, we’ve trolled on them before, although the one we used has more back space than the crownline and was 30’. We fished the keys and only within a couple miles of shore. Trolling only. I’d get you an 18’ high sided center console if I were you. That’ll suit what you’re trying to do if you’re trying to stay closer to shore on the reefs.

18* deadrise at transom (as per Crownline 1996-2007 models) and probably 30* on entry - sounds like a pounding, wet ride to me… X3 on keeping it inshore

that is not an ocean going vessel. probably best if you stay inside. good luck.

Thanks for the responses. Everyone is saying the same thing and I have concluded that the people in the know are right. I will be keeping my boat inshore or near shore (Jetties)

Good decision  We don’t like anybody getting hurt out there and I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t so.
