Offshore report for 8-8-13

Today we started trolling in 130 feet on the 350 line, targeting wahoo. The first fish of the day was a nice king mackerel on the purple mackerel Rapala CD Magnum diving plug. Trolled to the ledge to work the live bottom, but only caught a barracuda, a bonita, and an amberjack. We left the ledge and headed offshore, but didn’t get too far before a wahoo hit the Rapala. Boated a 35 lb. wahoo and worked the area in 210 feet of water for the rest of the afternoon. Ended up with four wahoos, the largest weighing 65 lbs. and four dolphins. We released three of the dolphins (under 10 lbs.) and kept a 20 lb. dolphin.

We missed four or five other wahoos, either cutting the mono on the long riggers or pulling the hooks on the Rapala. All of the action was on the 380 line in 210 feet.

The ocean was really nice today. We had to dodge a bit of rain, but no lightning or wind in the rain. Came in at 26 knots on our 24ft. Sea Hunt.

great job how did water look

What were you catching the wahoo on? All on the Rapala plug or any on live baits?

The water was clean, but not really blue.

We caught the two wahoos on the Rapala and Lehi Squitches (pink) for the other two.

Nice report! Just wondering if you guys were targeting wahoo why not fish all wire?

Sometimes the wahoo are wire-shy. I’d rather get more chances at the hoos and loose a few rigs than not get bites at all.

So you guys fished all mono? Wow, maybe I need to switch it up. What lb test leader?

Nice report Captain- we were south of you yesterday and found several big floating logs and crates and other fish holding structure on a strong current edge with no fish holding on any of the floating debris- it was a beautiful day to be out there

Nice job capt
