Offshore Saturday May 14

Day 2 heading offshore Saturday with a total of 5 hours sleep in 2 days. Seas are a lot calmer today compared to Friday. We cruised out around 30 mph heading back to our spot in 500 feet. As soon as we arrived and put lines out we immediately had a triple hook up. The day started off great. However, after the triple hook up we went several hours without a strike. The seas started kicking up 4 feet at 4 seconds and white caps. It made it very difficult to find rips and slick water. I made a decision to head east to deeper water. Right away we picked up 2 more fish. It slowed down again until about 12 noon and Ryan spotted a tree in the water and there was a green Sea Fox over by the tree. So I radioed the boat to find out what kind of tree it was. He said it was a big palm tree and they had picked up 8 Mahi on the tree. So I ask permission to make a pass by the tree and he said that was fine they were leaving. Before, we could get beside the tree we had a double on. As we passed you could see fish all around the tree. We made several more passes and one time we had 4 on. Jason had to leave early so we decided to head home. The seas were really choppy and coming out of the south, which made for a rough wet ride home. The guys had trouble keeping the hooks in the fish so we probably lost 8 good fish. Ended the day with 11 large good quality fish. Both days the bite was on at 12 noon. We caught most of our fish after 12 noon. Great time and great crew; Jason, Clyde, Bill, Ryan, and Alan. Day was made great by Ryan spotting the Palm Tree.

For your information, I spoke to Don Hammond, AKA the Dolphin Guy and he said with the boats in his area we have already caught more Mahi YTD than through July of 2015. What a great year. All of my trips this year have been double digits.

Had a great time as always fishing aboard Miss Emily. The palm tree was the day maker.

I was in Mighty Fine, the SF on the palm when you arrived. It was a daymaker for us also… we had three in the box before spotting it. We came up on it kind of quick and before we could decide whether to troll by it, we saw the mahi circling under it and the crew started pitching at 'em… it was on!!! All the fish we pulled from it were nice size also. They disappeared for a while and we knew it would be a long ride back so we decided to leave. One more similarity of our trip with yours… the wet ride home!!

Thank you for letting us do a pass by. It amazed me that we ended up docking beside you back at Ripley Light marina. What are the odds of that happening.

That tree was holding a lot of fish, not surprised since we didn’t see a single weed all day but a ton of bait.

Great day guys. I went due east and tried from 180-600’. There was no bait, no tree, no weeds, and only one little guy.

Thanks again for letting me tag along at the last minute. Good thing for the dolphin that the tree disappeared on us or we’d still be fishing it this morning.
