For those of us who don’t have huge boats and only have one engine I was wondering how far out you have to go to catch dolphin, blackfin, wahoo? how many miles out you need to run to make a trip like that worth it and to catch some fish?
40-45ish straight out
I use to own a 20 foot scout with single engine and fished between 35 and 50 miles caught a lot of fish where people said I wouldn’t in shallow water but at the rite time of the year .

What’s not a “huge boat” in your opinion? I have a 22’ with a single screw and I’ve been to the 226 and back a few times.
During the warmer months I’ve caught smaller dolphin as shallow as 80 feet, wahoo in 100’ (by Comanche). People have seen and caught baby sails as close as the Charleston 60 and closer in the past. Ya never know.
We fished tue May 1st in waters 100ft to 120 ft,lots of life ,mahi and wahoo out there ,we also saw a sail,33 miles out.

23 seacraft 275 suziki.
I put a decent phin in the boat today in 130’.
23’ Seacraft . . . . . yeah, you can get out there and catch dolphin and wahoo. I’d say get out to the ledge area, start looking for weeds, temp breaks, etc. People do this in much smaller boats than yours.
Haha some days I wish I was in a boat that big. Just pay close attention to the weather and you are fine when the weather is good. We have been to the stream in a 19.7 pioneer and gotten sails and up to 70 lb wahoo, also go a sail out there in a pathfinder last year. Just look for 2 ft at 8 seconds or better and you will be fine as long as you have fuel and the right safety equipment…pay attention to storms kicking up though, could get bad quick.
Find a buddy boat that is about the same size as yours and stay within eyeshot of him and you can extend your comfort zone a bit as long as fuel allows.
how far out is the ledge?
The ledge is generally the area between about 150 and just over 200’ of water. If you go to the Commanche Reef, in about 100’, that’s about 35 miles out. You have to travel another 15 miles or so to start seeing the steeper drop off of that you don’t see for the first 35 - 40 miles because of the gradual grade of the bottom from the beach out.
We went yesterday in a 22 sea hunt. I rented an epirb for $53, had 2 spare radios and 2 spare batteries. Got my first wahoo and several others.

We were in 155’ when the sun came up yesterday. Released a sail just before the sun broke the horizon. Came in with a few dolphin, a skip jack and lots of laughs. I loved my yamaha 150 when we filled it back up on the way home. 37.25 gallons at 3.65 equals $135.96. A reliable boat and knowing the fuel range is a must. Watch the weather, have your safety gear in order and have a float plan or a buddy boat. Hve fun and be careful.
