Oil change method

I am at my 300 hour service and need to change my oil. I am tempted to buy a Jabsco oil pump/tank ($100), but was wondering if the “pump-out method” is any more effective than just opening the oil drainplug? BTW, the motor is a 150 Merc Verado.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I pump mine out with one of the $40 or $50 pumps from Northern Tool. Works great, and I think it holds 2 gallons.

it just seems to me, that you get a better job if you “drain out” rather than a “pump out”, I let mine drain for about 30 minutes and this seems to work the best for me,
you are only doing this every 100 hours, so get the best job you can get… just my opinion

From what I have heard from several shops, it is the way they do it. It’s really easy, and it probably gets more of the old oil out than draining, especially if there is a slight lip inside the drain hole.

sucking the oil out, with the proper pump will do just as good a job as draining.
the new motors have the oil dipstick tube that goes al the way to the bottom of the oil pan.

Thanks for all of the input. I bought the Jabsco oil pump, but will take it back. Now I can put that money towards more batteries because someone stole 2 new Optima yellowtops from me!!:angry::face_with_head_bandage::roll_eyes:
