was out yesterday and noticed oil slick behind the boat. immediately headed for the hill. i believe it is coming from the seal around the shaft. how easy or hard is replacing all of the seals down there. should i do it myself or have it done professionally

Go check out my thread titled “This is my Johnson…” Might be on page six by now. I had replaced shift seals and shaft seals in the lower unit . Not very difficult if you are mechanically inclined.
It should be a similar process for most outboards.
the oil on my johnson seems to be coming from the exhaust/prop area

Sounds like the lower seals, be careful it is tricky. I blew the lower seals out on my old Suzuki a few years back and had two of my buddies that are VERY MECHANICALLY INCLINED and they backed off of it. We had the manual and everything but there was a special tool recommended
Took the lower unit to mechanic and $185 later he had seals redone(fishing line) and also installed new impeller while at it and I put lower unit back on.
From what I remember there was some things that were shimmed or something in the lower unit that we thought we could really screw up
After motor blew sold that lower unit to a guy that is still running the piss our of it
definatly not fuel remnants, it smells just like the foot lube i put in about 3 months ago, ill call my buddy and have him look at it im sure its the seals

yes there was water in the fluid, drained and refilled
pulld the bearing carrier out yesterday and replaced the big 3.5 inch oring and the prop shaft seals, gonna river test it today unless i figure a way to check it without putting it in the water

You mentioned pressure testing the lower in another thread regarding the lower unit. Does that require special tools etc. or do you just fit the nozzle of an air hose in one of the oil refill hole and looke for oil spurts ?
ok wow, put the bpat back in the water today to put it on the lift, and went to plane it out and it wouldnt go, went into reduction mode and said low oil. it wasnt the foot oil leaking it was the engine oil leaking, ive determined that it is leaking out of the exhaust most likely from the power head gasket into the exhaust, this i know is gonna cost big bucks and i dont believe tht i have the knowledge/skills/tools to do it

In your driveway, tilt your motor down into a 55 gal drum or large barrel filled with water. you can test it in your driveway and never leave the house. Also, you will keep the oil out of the river if there is still a problem.
