oil coming out of foot

Went to take boat out for first time this year, started at the storage place to make sure thing were ok before pulling to landing.

Ran it on hose an notice oil leaking from around prop an coming out
of prop. shut down an raised motor oil stop.

Major or minor problem?

thanks in advance

If it’s a 2 strk it may just be oil residue in the exhaust.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

yep, could easily be just excess 2 stroke/ carbon residue, but NEED to have it checked

that was what I thought at first but think there is too much oil coming out of the foot.

Is the oil black? Normally the gear oil won’t be black, but usually the color it was when it first went in, with perhaps a little dark tint. The stuff left over from 2-stroke burning is usually soot black and a bit runnier, at least on the 4 outboards we’ve had (all very old OMC)

By the way, did I bump into you this weekend out in a kayak? Spoke to someone yesterday about this exact same thing.

It is a 2 struck an the oil that is running out is black an thin.

Would it have something to do with been first time cranked this year?

yep

If it’s black and thin then I think you probably just have unburnt fuel/oil.

It’s still a really cheap insurance policy to dump your gear oil and replace it. Note the color of the gear oil, or if you see any water come out when you drain it. You’ll know immediately if your gear oil is the culprit by the color and consistency.

Thanks for all the information.
Went back an started it back up on hose no oil, so guess it was
just excess. Never have let it set up for 4 month before.
Went an changed foot oil just to be on safe side too.
thanks again

Also the gear oil in the lower unit has a very distinct smell. If it didn’t stink it probably wasn’t gear oil.
