Oil injector problem

Any advice and comments would be appreciated.

40 HP mercury 2-stroke 12 years old.

Got to the ramp today and started the boat while still on trailer with the motor in the water. Good thing since it never ran good and the fishing trip was scuttled.

The motor was spitting out lots of blue smoke and would only start and run with the throttle wide open. Ran at maybe 1500 rpm and would conk out if the throttle was lowered. Once I saw some black oil spots showing up on the water around the motor it was obvious that way to much oil was getting into the fuel.

Pulled spark plugs at home, lots of oil. I suppose the oil injector is malfunctioning and putting in way too much oil. Is this broken, or does it just need to be re-synchronized?

Boat worked fine last time out 6 weeks ago. Never had any other oil issues.

Anyone ever replace the oil pump on one of these? Could something else be causing this?

odd are, teh fuel evaporated from teh carbs from sitting and the oil filled the carbs up, try running it on the hose for a while and see if it clears up. Check the oil pump linkage rod to make sure it didn’t pop off the carb linkage, if it does, the oil pump goes full rich. My 60 had a bad pump and it was filling the lower cylinder with oil when it sat, when I would try to start it, it acted like it had a weak battery, when i finally got it started, it would smoke up the whole back yard, once it ran for a while, it was ok. The pumps on those engines don’t give a lot of problems

Eliminate the pump and mix the gas and you have one less thing to worry about…that way you can make sure it right on the money.also when washing down and flushing motor unplug the gas line and run all the fuel out before storing for next trip

Thanks. I thought about going old school and mixing the gas and oil. I would need to bypass a few electronics too since the oil tAnk has a sensor and alarm but may even limit rpm if it senses oil. I could leave the oil tank full and just disconnect it.

I have left the boat many times for more than six weeks ( in garage ) and never had this issue. So much oil was coming out that it sure seemed like something is broke. The linkage is connected. Ran it on the hose for 10 minutes and it did not clear up. Pulled the plugs again and the top cylinder seemed to have more oil than the bottom. But still had the new plugs covered in oil.

Thanks for the input.

Got rid of the oil pump on mine and it was the best thing I ever did. Mine was overoiling and fouling plugs like crazy.

start with sparparts suggestion.
after verifying spark on all cylinders.
if its not sparking correctly, the gas will evaporate leaving oil behind

Is it very complicated to change from oil injected to mixing? What would be a ball park figure to disconnect oil injection and alarms at a boat shop on 98 115 hp evinrude? Thanks
