2003 Yamaha 70 TLRB. It had not been cranked up in about 4-5 months. Got it cranked and running yesterday, seemed to be running smoothly albeit a little smokier than usual but not terribly so. I let it run 5 minutes or so shut it off and then re-cranked it about 5 minutes later and again let it run for a few minutes.
A little while later, I noticed oil (2-stroke) was leaking out of the engine compartment down onto the lower unit. Not a lot but I know it wasn’t there previously as I had cleaned the boat/motor Sunday.
I’m assuming (hoping) it is just one of the oil lines in the oil injection system. Any thoughts/ideas? I’m going to give it a cursory look but will probably end up taking it to the shop as we’re going on a trip in 3 weeks and I don’t have much time to fool with it.
I hate oil injection setups. I yanked mine off my 2001 Johnson long ago. Heard way to many Merc and Yammie guys blowing powerheads because of oil injection failures. Have you thought about just scrapping it and mixing?
No, I haven’t really thought about scrapping it because up til now, it has not been a problem. I really like the convenience of auto-injection as opposed to adding oil every time I add gas.
SHUT UP Pea. It is a 14 year old motor.

Bob, I have been better about starting it on the muffs and letting it run at least once a month but, been busy and a tad slack. Sucks when there is a bigger chance of your boat dry-rotting than there is wearing out from use. Of course at 14 years old, I am finding stuff here and there that needs replacing.
Not a word Pod.

Not been cranked in 4-5 months???
Doug, how about starting the engine up more than a couple times a year?
Sorry, but I don’t have an answer for you. But I do start mine up every couple of weeks or so during the cold months.

go to any car parts place and buy the oil additive that will glow bright yellow under a black light; you’ll quickly see the leak. don’t buy the entire kit , just get the leak detector and buy the black light from the toy section at walmart
I have drained most of the oil out of the tank and have pulled all the bolts loose, looking for obvious sign of a leak. Pretty sure its not gear oil because its that blue 2-stroke oil color and it starts up at the top of the lower unit, just under the lower cowl.
How would there be unburnt oil, how does that happen, how would I know if that is it and how would I fix it?
Sorry for all the ???
Thanks all.

This update is for Peapod because I know he worries about me.
After draining the oil tank, pulling it off and cleaning everything so I could see evidence of a leak, I refilled (halfway instead of all the way) the tank and restarted the motor. So far no signs of any oil. Doing some Googling revealed a couple of sites where folks had reported leaks on the 70 and 90 TLR when the oil tank was full and if the motor had been tilted forward. One guy said his never leaked anymore if he did not top off his tank. I figured I’d try that. Only time will tell.
Hope the not smoking is still going well Bob.

where the oil fill neck meets the tank, sometimes they will leak
the rubber boot that seals the oil sending unit to the tank will also leak.
if a motor is running rich, it will not burn all the fuel. that unburnt fuel gets pushed out the exhaust.
it will leave a black slimy puddle that looks like old car oil. it will not be clean blue oil.
the gear lube we use is a blue synthetic blend and looks similar to 2 stroke oil
