I was very blessed last year to join a nice hunt club that has some incredible members all of which have a like minded approach to hunting and animal harvest. However this particular club is run by a family with roots running deep into southern soil and traditions. They have been very generous in inviting my family to share in some of these events. Last weekend was “grinding of the cane” an all day some times 2 day event where the sugar cane is cut, pressed and reduced into cane syrup. The main day is a huge family and friend picnic. Some of the gourds used date back to his grandfathers times and are well worn. The use of propane to cook is new and the mule on the press has been replaces by a tractor but the tradition in it’s preparation date back a long, long time.

Towards the end of the day the boy and made a quick sprint to a tree stand for our first deer hunting adventure. With everything a boy could need for a 45 min sit. 3 Different snack, water and a blanket. The first deer that came out ran in sheer terror as he screamed with delight but soon returned and the words “shoot it daddy” began to become louder and louder once again. We convinced each other that that deer needed to grow another year. When the second deer came out there was no more reasoning with a 4 year old. This deer needed to come home with us!! Ear muffs on and eyes peeled down range we had to take a minute because the whole tree was shaking with excitement. After the shot we were more excited than Christmas almost jumped from the stand if not for the harness he would have made it! Not the biggest Doe in the
Your post brought back fond memories of times in a deer stand with my kids. My daughter used to be so thrilled to see a deer walk up and squealed more than once…half the time the gun was in the case. I’ve seen young bucks do back flips when she would try and “whisper”…there’s one!!! Her brother sssuhing her was even better. Most fun I’ve ever had deer hunting.
Great post. My son is 3 and I took him “wolf hunting” with his bb gun at 7am once this season. He had a blast but wants to go back and build a bridge next time because the wolf got to the other side of the creek and escaped. Their little imagination is great. I’ve been reluctant to put him up in the stand with me because of his age but seeing your post gave me some confidence. I think he’s going to be ready to tag along next year

Put him in a harness or tie him to you. I took care of plenty of adults that fell out of deer stands. I started my boy out hunting with a BB gun...410(one shell at a time)...28G...20G...now throws a 12G like he's been doing it all his life. Best investment you'll ever make.
Not many Cane Grindings anymore. Glad you got to be part of one. Love some cane syrup over some fresh made biscuits. Also very good mixed in with some baked beans.
Got my Christmas bottle of cane syrup last week.
