Old Crab Traps

Hello everybody,
I am a local Boy Scout trying to get his Eagle Project done, but I have run into a little road bump. My plan was to build a reef out of old crab traps filled with oysters and concrete in the marsh, but my source of traps unfortunately couldn’t provide. If anybody has some old traps that they don’t need it would be extraordinarily helpful for me if they would let me take em off their hands. Please PM or email me at fishguy98@gmail.com

Thanks,
Creed

I will check with my daddy but i think he might have gotten rid of his old ones. how many do you need?

Any amount would be helpful but I at least six to build one reef

Make sure you properly close the traps so that nothing can get into it and become trapped and die. “Ghost traps” are a huge problem in the waters, and once something dies in there, it attracts others, re-baiting the trap, continuing the cycle. Think about placement, deep water so that it is not a hazard to navigation, I dont know if you have ever hit a crab trap and had it wrapped up in the prop, but it is not a good experience.

I am an eagle scout myself and it was one of the best experiences, but please think a little more before you go dumping old traps back in the water. Good Luck!

strip…strip…FISH ON!

We plan on wiring them up tight and marking the location that the reef will lie

I wish you well with your project. I do hope you have contacted the EPA and other authorities for any permits needed. It’s a shame, but that’s the way it is today.

I am also an Eagle Scout. I sent you an email.

You probably already have, but contact the Coast Guard before you proceed.
