Old Johnson 120 VRO identification

I need some help from an expert to identify this old outboard model number. I found the serial number on the freeze plug, but the ID tag is long gone.

The owner states that the motor should be the original to the boat. The boat is a 1990 key west 19ft center console bay boat.

I found this model chart for Johnson motors, but I’m just guessing on it right now. Are there any experts out there?

That chart is correct. But the number on the plug is useless.

Was this boat registered by the owner if so the motor model number was on the engine registration, That would be on file with DNR and he could get a replacement Title/registration. Just my $.02

Good idea, but the boat is from Tennessee and they don’t title or register the motors there, or at least they didn’t when this boat was last titled.
I’m trying to be helpful but this mess looks like its going to be tricky to figure out.

model number tells what year it is
serial number does not number on plug appears to be a serial number
try to find an online cross reference that will use the serial number to describe model

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING

Can’t quite tell from pic, but is that a manual tilt?

If no one has removed the oil injection and you plan on running it, I’d do so and premix.

“If Bruce Jenner can keep his wiener and be called a woman, I can keep my firearms and be considered disarmed.”

Its already running on premix with the oiler removed. It has an electric start and power trim. We need to install new trim seals, and that’s one reason we were hoping to find the model number.
We might just have to try decoding it from the chart, or maybe try calling the manufacturer… but I don’t think that will get us far.

Does no body have the bill or call whom is was purchased from “dealer”

You are a good friend to be helping out the owner with that project. Every time I see that motor from the late 80s to early 90s I can only think of the most interesting man in the world, “stay thirsty my friends.” Those bad boys love some fuel. You probably already know this, but before you go to far I would inspect the hydraulic rams very closely. The least inperfection in those rams will cause the seals to leak again. I had a model similar to that a few years back and the seals started leaking on it, I pulled the entire trim assembly off and carried over to Seels because I did not have a pin wrench the right size to remove the covers. They only charged me an hour worth of labor to install the new kit, but said they could not guarantee the repair. They showed me some very minor corrosion/scratches on the Rams and said this would cause the seals to prematurely fail. I got about a years worth of use out of it before it started leaking again. To purchase the entire new assembly is much more than what the motor is worth. I don’t know of anyone in town that has as much OMC knowledge as those veterans at Seels. If you are still struggling with the identification you may check with them for help.
