I have ran and worked on a few offshore boats locally and in N.C. through out my teens and early 20’s at C of C.I was always rigging ballyhoo- dredges, dragging islanders and gaffing etc, but never got much of a chance to “be the one to actually fish”
My Cousin from Atl and I set off with Captain Jeff of “Oldmancharters” at 6:00 am Saturday 7-18-20015 I have to say WE WERE very impressed with Capt. Jeff</font id=“red”>…ESPECIALLY for such an old man…heh heh he out-hustled pretty much any other captain i have worked with.
We listened and looked but heard zero tail flips south side of south jetty running from N. tip of S jetty toward dynamite I wish we looked a[bit longerbut Capt. Jeff Had us all over the fish all day. (it just took a bit of time to figure the circle jerk)
- Live bait would have been cool, but we didn’t really need it
- 5/0 SHARP circle. Lightest diameter you can justify.
- Bring a small hook sharpener.
- I think the little bsb show up and bang it around and then the Biger ones come check it out.
- 8 oz eggs allowed me to feel the sand vs live bottom while slowly i would bottom bounce. I believe for me the “heavier sinker” aided in hiding the little bites (thus only lifting when i had the big thump) I must have caught thirty, 4 to 6 inch fish before that.
- If i would have fished that way the whole time I may have landed double the amount of larger fish…
I landed 2 Big Vermilion and lost another several
Capt. Jeff or I will post pictures soon.
Cousin and I brought back a plethora of BSBs and B-liners… and 4 red ear lobes.
Captain Jeff is one of those guys you could put anywhere and he will find fish. You can just tell he’s the real deal. I cant wait to go out again with him.
