I recently got a boat with a older Johnson 135 on it. The previous owner said he had the carbs rebuilt about2 years ago then it sat for about a year then he ran it on the muffs a few times but that was it. I took it to the lake and it wouldn’t gain many rpms. It wouldn’t gain enough to get on plane. Friday I tried to run it on the muffs and it would start up then die within a few seconds. What do y’all think could be causing this? Carbs?
After sitting that long I would drain the old gas and fill with non ethanol. Clean the carbs and change the fuel filters and change/add water separator. You should be good to go after that. You should also check compression. You can buy a gauge for $40 or rent one for free from any auto parts store.
I should have put this is the first post but all the old gas has been drained and no ethanol has been added and fuel filters have been changed. I will have to get a fuel/water separator. I checked compression before I purchased it and it is the high compression model and it has between 155-165 on all 4 cylinders. Thanks for your quick reply. I will clean the carbs as soon as I get a chance.
Thanks. We are about to get hit with snow and ice here in the upstate so it may be a few days before I can get to check on the carbs. Will report back once I get to check carbs
Got the carbs off today and they are amazingly clean. I did find a rather large crack in the fuel line that I think could be the problem. I think it was sucking air through that. Does this sound right?
I did clean them again and I did a little trick somebody taught me that if you blow through the carb through the intake with the carb right side up and you hear air come out the other side you are flowing good and if you blow through it upside down and nothing comes out then your needle is seating good and both of happened with mine
