Older Motor Problems

I’ve got an older (mid 90’s) Evinrude 4hp that I put on my 14 foot john for puttering around the creeks. Motor starts up fine, and runs ok, but about 6 months ago it started skipping when I turned the throttle past about halfway. I’ve taken out a few times since and can run it fine at lower speeds, but anytime I try to speed up the motor skips up. Only have this problem when I’m in gear, works fine in neutral.

Anyone know what this might be?

I had a very old Erude that did the same thing. In my case when I advanced the throttle the spark advance moved a worn plug wire too close to metal and caused the skipping. The plug wires moved whenever I’d advance the throttle. I wrapped the bad spot with electrical tape, just to be sure that was the problem, and then replaced the wire after about six months. Hope you problem is as simple to fix as that was.

Possible the high speed jet is partially blocked. Pour a little 2-cycle gas in a pump-spray bottle (kinda like an old windex bottle) get the motor up to speed and when the skipping starts just hit it with a shot of the gas in the spray bottle. If it does’t affect it then it is probably electrical. If it smooths out for a couple of seconds you’ll know to clean the carb.

you can accomplish the same thing with a propane torch, just make sure its not lit
