Chuck, thanks for the info about the verado site.
I think I’m going into V-Rod overload.
Lot’s of good information over there.

Happy boatin’ y’all!!

Chris, If you need any help on anything let me know. Like I said, I provided you enough information to keep you busy until your leg is healed. If you need anything else just shoot me an email.

Nice ride!!

Not sure what Phin is talking about only using 1/4 tab offshore. Maybe at WOT but tabs are your friend.

Post some more pics!! Need some inside, motors, electronics, etc.

Behind this helm stands a sickness that not even a women can cure.

Here’s another suggestion or two:

G-LOC (It is a term for fighter jets that means G-force-induced Loss of Consciousness)
Redout (another term for G-LOC)

Ask your buddies with the Donzi whether tabs are always “your friend.”

I’m sure Gotcha can expound from the perspective of someone who is actually a pretty good driver of these high speed boats offshore from what I understand. How much tab do you use on these sized fountains, gotcha? Would using too much tab be a serious safety concern in your opinion? [:0] Is telling a new owner to not use more than 1/4 of tab offshore terrible advice?

Thanks,
Seeking validation on CF.

Actually using too much tab can be extremely dangerous in a 31 Fountain. It’s about the worst possible thing you can do while driving that boat. That boat likes it high and dry, and will bow steer harshly or pierce a wave with more than a little tab. I ran mine between 0 and 3 most of the time, and the gauge goes to 7. I think the most I used in these boats was about 4. Going past 5 at higher speeds in this boat is very unwise. Run them as high as possible without compromising the ride too much, especially at higher speeds, but the main idea is to just keep the bow level. This is NOT like your average boat. Most boats need a lot of tab offshore. A 31 Fountain needs only enough to level the boat horizontally. At slow speeds, you use more tab, and at higher speeds, you use less (and often none or close to none); and while this part may sound like common sense, it isn’t in this case, because this common rule is exaggerated with this boat. You have to actively drive that boat and stay on top of it, constantly tweaking the tabs and the trim (and the trim is a similar equation). This boat is very tab-sensitive, and a slight adjustment can make a big difference. People often find that this boat actually handles the ocean much better at higher speeds with less tab, while I’ve heard of people literally having their consoles knocked loose from piercing a wave because they didn’t know how to properly drive this boat and used to much tab. On the flip side, if you come flying out of the jetties at full throttle and no tab, and hit those rollers at the mouth, you can stand that boat straight up in the air like the Statue of Liberty. So, there’s no one rule that fits all situations. You have to be careful and on your toes, especially while running fast on the ocean. However, I would say that a good general rule of thumb for this boat is that you should be very light on the tabs, and use them a lot less than you would with other boats. That boat is like a race car. It requires finesse.

P.S. Whatever you do

Thanks for the advice Phin, and the confirmation Lee:wink:.
I think having this broken leg may be a good thing for me right now, because it’ll force me to take it easy for a while.
I could tell yesterday, that this is no typical boat.
The torque and responsiveness of this thing is sick.

I’ll take you up on that offer for some lessons.
I definitely don’t want to leave the crew behind.

When I’m comfortable with this thing and my leg can handle it, I’m sure I’ll be looking for gas money for some offshore trips. If anybody wants to go fishing on a speedboat, hit me up here in about a month.

Happy boatin’ y’all!!

Just because a boat will run 60 + mph doesn’t mean you have to run 60 + mph everywhere and offshore??!! Only time I open mine up WOT is when I get back in from offshore in the river just to “blow it out” for a few minutes. The term cruising speed means just that,if the seas are good I’ll cruise at 35-40 mph if they are rough it drops to whatever is a pleasant ride, why beat yourself and the boat up? My boat, yes will run 50-55 mph my car will run 135 mph, I don’t drive 135 everywhere I go,no differance in a boat.
PS good looking boat :smiley::smiley:

There’s nothing wrong at all with driving a 31 Fountain at 60 MPH on the ocean if the operator is sufficiently skilled to do so. Just like with driving motorcycles instead of cars, everyone personally decides what legal risks they are willing to take for their fun. Some people like driving fast, are skilled at it, and that’s what a 31 Fountain is specifically made to do. To each his own. So, no hard feelings, man, but you cruise at 35, and we’ll wave as we pass by, get in an extra hour or two of fishing, and have a rip-snortin’ blast of a time running to the hole and back.:smiley: And, there’s actually a big difference in a boat going 60 and a car going 135 on the interstate, because there is no speed limit on the water, the boat is designed to do it specifically, the car is not usually designed to be operated that fast on the road, even though it can (i.e., with the exception of a few expensive sports cars, the brakes and suspension are not designed for that use on most cars), and there are not 50,000 other boats on a single route. Of course, there are places and conditions where someone obviously should NOT drive a boat that fast, but there are also places where someone should not drive a boat at 35 MPH. Drive your car at 135 anywhere on the interstate, though, and you’ll be in jail because of the law, and it’s a whole lot more dangerous than driving a Fountain on the ocean at 60 (I know because I’ve done both in my lifetime). The interstates are designed for 75-mile-per-hour traffic. On roads that permit 70 MPH speeds, you probably drive 74 MPH regularly. So, you basicallty drive your car as fast as the law allows. We all do. And some of us do that with our boats, too. While driving your car at 135 will land you in the slammer, drive your 31 Fountain at 60 on the ocean with the proper skill, and it’s a lot of perfectly legal fun that specifically fits the design of the vessel. Believe it or not, a Fountain actually rides better going fast than slow. Of course, all of this is assuming th

GC I would love to go out on your boat one day, thanks for the offer…don’t get me wrong I’m not putting Fountains down by no way shape or form I’m just saying just because you newly obtained one doesn’t mean you have to put it in the water and bury the throttles 1st time out. It would be fun but not wise IMO

Me too. I mean, I did bury the throttles, but that was only in the river where the water was calm. It will be a little while before I do that with waves. That thing lists a lot if you don't know what you're doing (like me).
