On the Congaree

I have to begin by saying that I really appreciate all the info I have found on this site since I first started visiting last September. It has improved my fishing and provides some welcome armchair angling during the times I can’t get down to the Lowcountry.

We fish for the spawners that congregate between the bridges here in Columbia in April and follow them up into the Saluda in May. I use the same 9’ 9 wt. that I use for reds. A sink tip line with a shad or rainbow trout clouser is usually all you need…but it is fun to throw a big popper into them when they come up under the birds and are hitting on the surface. A 15 lb. striper in fast moving water is a lot of fun.
There is some wade fishing available around the bridges, but it’s best from a small boat. A couple of us use whitewater catarafts rigged out for fishing so we can run the rapids and get to spots where then john boats don’t want to go.

This fishing is just getting ready to start up. I’ll post some updates once it heats up some. Is it OK to post pictures? I’ve seen a few here, but not many…please advise…and thanks again for a great fishing site.

Post dem pics!! especially if it is a woman in a bathing suit holding the fish!

If it smells like fresh fish, your’re in the right place
Mark.

caught a 12 and 14 lb rock fish before the water came up, also hooked some nice channels on saturday

Hawkman, have you been fishing yet? I can see the Saluda across 126 from where I work. I could have at least 40 minutes to fish during lunch or hit it easily and have a few hours after work. No boat though so will have to go down by the rocks or zoo bridge. Any recommendations?
