Hit the Wando alittle before low tide this morning with some live shrimp. Managed to get 2 nice slot reds and one break off on my light tackle setup. My break off was about a 30inch red but once it got it up to my yak, it saved enough energy to take that last dive…then snap. My 6 lbs mono couldn’t match up to it’s strength, but man it’s always fun to try and catch these monsters with light tackle.
Good seeing you out there again yesterday. Here’s how my day went.
Launched at first light into a cold and foggy river. Amazingly still and quiet. One nice bonus about it being cold was no bugs. I paddled down the river to set up in the edge of a mud flat surrounded by oyster bars and mounds. I heard birds going crazy and looked across the river to see a big deer walking through a yard, down into the water, then swimming across the river and coming out onto a grass flat about 100 yards downstream. A little surreal that early in the morning.
Oh yeah, back to the fishing report. 3 breakoffs of HUGE fish between 6:30 and 7:00. The first one broke off after 2 or 3 hard runs and fighting him back to the yak.
Second nailed the DOA under the popping cork and went right over an oyster mound pulling 10 pounds of drag… see ya
Third nailed another DOA under the popping cork and went over the same oyster mound, same drag, … see ya too
Missed a couple more because of rubber hooks. They’d take the bait, I’d set the hook, drag would scream for a few seconds, then nothing.
Finally managed 2 slotties in the yak. First trolling a mud minnow up a skinny creek next to some docks. I stopped and made a few blind casts w/ DOA on the bottom. Third cast brought this pretty little 3 spot red.
Missed 2 more strikes while i was messing with him.
So my day was fish 7, Too Busy 2

Nice 3 spotter.
It definitely was a nice day out and I saw some really big tails that would be fun to catch. I had to sit out today to get some things done and on top of that, I got alittle sun burnt on my back.
Yesterday was church, harass my son to work on a school project, work on the starter on my wife’s van, harass my son some more, go to an Eagle COurt of Honor for one of the boys in our troop, harass my son some more, call it a day.
I know the fish were leader shy a couple of weeks ago, but getting cut off on fluoro or mono is getting old.

I rarely have the flourocarbon break. I usually use 20 lb flouro on a 30 lb Power Pro. If it gets a little abraided I change it out. Why do you think it’s breaking off?
I think I’m getting sliced off on the oyster mounds.

Hey too busy when you going again. I need to get out there are try for some reds.
I’ll be fishing somewhere Saturday if I’m still breathing. I don’t get to do Sunday very often because of family stuff.
