Onboard Charger

Anyone have a favorite…Guest, Cabela’s, Bass Pro, Minn Kota? I’m putting in a 24v trolling motor and wondering if the benefits are worth the money. Also trying to decide whether or not to keep the cranking battery under the console. The Optima’s exceed the cranking mins on my Yamaha so I can do without it. Would save 40pds while I’m adding 60pds. Also wondering which tm plug to use.

Minn Kota seems to be very well priced. I like it because you can get a 5 amp per bank charger for a good bit less than a 10 amp per bank. The five is just fine, as most people have at least 8 hours to charge the batts, and a 10 will do it a little quicker.

I agree with exactly what scboatservice said. I have the 2 bank minnkota 5 amp and it works great.

not sure of the brand name, but I got mine at Bass Pro about 5 years ago, it is a 3 bank, 10 amp charger, it is plugged in right now and has been plugged ever since I bought it. Never had any issues with it. I paid about $125.00

I think mine is a Minn Kota…it is a great feature to add to your boat…especially if you spend a lot of time on the water

I have a Promariner ProSport 12. It’s one of the best things I’ve put on my boat. I’d recommend one to anybody. The best part is that it’s 100% waterproof. Here’s a link: http://www.pmariner.com/productFeature.php?ProductNum=42012

I got mine at West Marine though.

Nothing but a “SMART-ELLIC”!

Somewhat related question…if you have a 3 bank charger and you’re only using 2 batteries, how can you safely uilize the 3 bank charger? Can you simply tape up the 3rd set of wires?

The charger will not send current down a lead that does not have a battery, so no danger, it will just set an error for that bank.
Some folks do not realize that with an automatic charger, if you completly drain or kill a battery, it will not charge it. You have to start it with a manual charger. Without any voltage, it does not know a battery is there, hence will not charge.

you can double up the leads, and it will double the charge amps, but I wouldnt do that on a deepcycle battery.

I have an onboard minn kota charger. It works very well, can’t say as much for the trolling motor. I checked everything out the day before going and it wouldn’t work. Batteries fully charged I have narrowed it down to the control board, but if anyone else has or had a Maxxum with the continous switch option and knows where I can get a control board please let me know. I can by-pass the board and the motor works, if anybody has suggestions I’m all eyes…
