My youngest son and I got an invite from Vinman to fish the Cooper today. We hit the water early enough to try some topwater and had a few hits but no major blowups. We moved on and as Vin usually does, (rude host) he caught the first of several fish. My son caught his first SC trout and the ribbing began because Dad had caught nothing. We saw bait everywhere and loaded up on some nice finger mullet (I caught those). We caught a few 13.5" trout and one that nearly choked on a FM nearly as big as he was. Vin continued his mastery by landing a beautiful, fat 27" red (show-off) on a special jig…pretty cool. We moved around and Vin caught a flattie, my son caught a couple under-sized trout, I caught a couple more 13.5" trout (not sure how Vin rigged this) and then finally, I caught a nice 16" trout (yaay, I was on the board). Things slowed down so we moved again. My son was growing impatient as nothing seemed interested in his mud minnows. I convinced him to try out a Trout Trick so he did. First cast, BAM, he catches his first ever redfish at about 16". Big smile there. I ended up catching a keeper red and a nice 17" flounder. We were rooting for my son to catch a flounder so we could score the triple slam but it was not to be. It was a beautiful day, spent with a good friend and my son and days don’t get much better than that.
Something I thought was really interesting was that the red’s stomachs were absolutely packed with fiddlers. I mean they looked like they were about to burst. The flounder were delicious and my wife was happy happy as she does love fresh flounder.
Sounds like a great day… Sounds like your son had a blast. And you are right on about the snacks. When I take my kids with me, the more snacks I have the longer I can fish. LOL!
When will those jigheads be available at Haddrell’s? Did very well with the samples this weekend coupled with a 4" Strike King Caffeine Shad (30+ reds Saturday). Thanks a bunch, Optiker, and a great day DF!

Good call Bart.

It was BYOS, and with a 12 year old on board, you must have plenty.

Smuckers premade pb&j… The only way to go. Pro-tip.
These are the memories that your boy will remember forever. Well done sir. Glad to see you kept things like they should be and properly out fished him. I hear pea pod Jr out fishes dad every time they go fishing now… Embarrassing if you ask me. Gotta give the boy something to strive for.
Caleb seems to do the same thing to me more and more. I guess that’s a sign of getting old?

Came down Sunday to kayak fish with my oldest son. Beautiful day but a bit on the slow side fishing wise. He caght a small black bass I caught a couple of just under slot reds and a decent trout. Most everyone we talked to was finding it slow…at least where we were. Still, a good day on the water and I got some exercise.
