Is this same Larry from Alutiiq?
Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.

Simple, really. Set out three anchors in a “triangle” pattern. Tighten all the ropes so that your “heading” and gps “position” will remain the same. (Example, one anchor straight off the stern, one in front of the boat but 45 degrees to port, than the third also in front, but 45 degrees to starboard) Put one pole behind the boat (gotta have a pole out!) and throw your bait balls directly in front of the boat. Sit back for 2 beers and throw over your bait. Wait a bit and throw again. PS tide and wind play a good part in your success. Just use your common sense…

If you are “one pole” shrimping, this means you are probably trying to do it alone. Shrimping is all about being with your buddies and having fun.

m_lit,
I was waiting for OnePole to reply, but I will give you the way he taught me. Your anchors are correct, but the one pole goes off the bow. With the bow as a reference, it is easier to see if you have drifted even a small amount, and that is very important when one-pole shrimping since the boat is your bait marker.
The bait is thrown about 5 ft off the port side and 5 feet off the starboard side. This gives you two targets to throw at. A pass consists of two throws and a 5 or 10 minute break. I think OnePole said 10 minutes, but if the shrimp are running good, 5 minutes seems a long time to wait.
By the way … one-pole shrimping is not restricted to one person. I always have someone else with me. That second person does not have to have any experience. This is a good opportunity for them to get experience casting from a boat. This is also a good way to fit into a crowded area. You don’t need 100 yards of clear space.

It’s a great way to have your kids out there and have fun. Might be good for some marriages too - I’m sure there are some out there that can recall some caster-driver/spouse discussions on reversing technique and stategy and the subtlties of wind and tide. lol
I set my front 2 anchors in a “Y’” angle. The pole goes in front of the bow, between the ropes, about 15-18" forward. A pole near the stern will not show if your bow has moved left or right 2-3 or more feet-- which can put one side over your bait and the other side further away. You don’t want your anchors at too much of an angle as it can interfere with casting. Most of the force from the water is from the front, but pulling the net, or wind or current from one side puts side tension on your anchor. It’s normal for the boat to move a little as you pull your net, but it should return to the original position.
I start by eeing where I want to end up. I head directly inot the current or parhasp a bit to the side if the iwnd is a factor. I drop my rear anchor and make sure it grabs. I let out about 30 feet of rope. As I get close to the 30 feet, I put my boat in neutral and go to the bow. As the rear rope just starts to come tight, I throw one anchor up and off to one side. This is laways the sdie wher e any wind or current may be coming from. I set it, drop back about 10-15 feet depending on how deep it is, and tighten these 2 ropes. I then throw my other anchor out to the opposite side of the bow. You may have to drop back a little more to get both front anchors set right. Make sure all ropes are tight, especially the front 2. If the boat is not quite into the current or there is a fairly strong wind, you amy want to use a 4th lightweight anchor to help the windy or current side hold better. You can also begin by tossing both fornt anchors off the each side and allowing the wind and tide to drift backward before throwing the rear anchor. This can work but very often you won’t end up in the right direction- I’ve tried it and it’s very hard to get right.
Make a practise cast to see where an easy toss lands. That’s where you want to put your bait- taking into account how fast the current is. You may have to throw bait up-current a little from where you want it to end up on the bottom.
As for how long to wait betwe
OP - sorry your back is still hurting. Hope you get out a bunch and catch em up this season.
I used Onepole’s method last year and it works like a champ. Keeps the stress factor way down too. He’s a real gentleman sharing his knowledge with us. Thanks man.

I don’t know how onepole gets any shrimping done with all that typing! Thanks for the info, it all makes sense now!
WE’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BOAT!
he has copied and pasted that for 19 years now! good stuff…

onepole?
I would like to buy you a beer some day! I don’t care how many “typo’s” you make… It’s the thought that counts!
Thank you!

PS: If a fly lost it’s wings, would it be called a walk?
Anyone tried this using stick-it anchors and brackets in front and back?
The way the current gets running in the Bay would put an awful lot of stress on them. I use 3 very small “Bruce” anchors and it holds well.

My son and I 1 pole it a lot (when we actually shrimp) and I find it leads to less fussing.
Think of all the wear and tear One Polling saves on shifting your engine to death while dealing with wind, current and the cast net thrower and all of his issues as you approach each pole.
Did I mention your not spliting the catch with a non family member?
Agreed, this can be a fellowship but be sure of the objective. Getting shrimp for food or just having fun with my buddies. Eithier way, Its a Blast.
If all else fails, stop by your local seafood dock on the way home and Buy your winter supply of AMREICAN GROWN FREE RANGE SHIMP and laugh with your budies about all the fun you had the night before.
Shrimping is a blast any way you do it,
