Ooh Wee!

It still didn’t look good to me but I figured I’d give it a try. Had a late start ( I wasn’t in a big hurry to get disappointed) and I couldn’t get out of the jetties with my small ride when I got there. Passed DropnHook29 in the jetties and he was headed in. Did anybody get another round of b-liners? There was no way I could get out there. I ended up screwin’ around in the harbor. Caught a bunch of tiny bsb’s and caught one big gorilla 18" bsb off of Sullivans and broke off something really big (probably a shark)while drinkin’ beer. Came home to a neighborhood that I could barely get my boat through for all the trick or treaters. Knocked down more beer while cleaning up and now I’m ready to roll to a Halloween party. How was you’re day? Did you guys really push through all those waves? Did anyone catch one more round of the good tastin’ red b-liners?

Took a Butt whuppin for a few miles then Common sence took over and we turned around and came back in.

Lets cross some Eyes.

We got out to do some diving. Captain Gabe got us out there. Got our last 4 Grouper till April 1, 2010.

Groupers open till 12/31, I think, pending the outcome of the December 7th SAFC meeting. Hopefully some of the hard work of several members of this site will pay off and we wont be “Pearl Harbored”. Much thanks to those who put the time effort and money into this. Remember to attend the meeting in Charleston tomorrow.

Link to the grouper bulletin below:

that seems a little misleading. The shallow water limit is very clear, but the other limit does not have a season. Is this correct? And then if it is how can you be allowed to harvest fish from deeper water that you cannot harvest from shallow??? I know what the “man” is going to say at the boat ramp if i bring a scamp from “deep” water.

Measures New Regulations
Recreational
Grouper aggregate* bag limit -3 fish
Gag/black grouper bag limit within aggregate -1 gag or black grouper (combined)
Vermilion snapper bag limit -5 fish
Shallow water grouper** closed season -January-April
Vermilion snapper closed season -November-March

  • Grouper aggregate includes: Misty grouper, red grouper, scamp, tiger grouper, yellowedge grouper, yellowfin grouper, blueline tilefish, sand tilefish, coney, graysby, red hind, and rock hind. Snowy grouper and golden tilefish are also in the grouper aggregate with a maximum of 1 fish per person, for each species.
** Shallow water grouper include: Gag, black grouper, red grouper, scamp, red hind, rock hind, coney, graysby, yellowfin grouper, yellowmouth grouper, and tiger grouper.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. </font id=“size2”>

Hate to say it but it won’t be worth going out 30+ miles anymore with the limits decreasing. You should just move to areas in FL where you can stay less than 5 miles out or if you feel froggy go to Destin/Pensacola and fish 10-15 miles.

Lost@sea
Don’t confuse recreational and commercial. But I agree, the regs are getting harder and harder to follow. I guess this thread belongs in discussion, but not many posts going up in reports anyway.

I believe i am reading that correctly. The commercial quota is list directly below the recreational. If I am wrong please let me know that might help with the confusion.

I think the regs would be easier to interpret if they just listed when a species was open and closed and left out “Deep and shallow” terminology. There are no general or large closer areas or depth restrictions currently, as the regs seem to apply. If you look at the commercial regs in the box you see “(all shallow-water groupers*)” I think this might be a typo and should have been a double asterisk, just adding to confusion. Bottom line I would say for the recreational sector:

Gag, black grouper, red grouper, scamp, red hind, rock hind, coney, graysby, yellowfin grouper, yellowmouth grouper, and tiger grouper closed January-April. These fish comprise 99% of the grouper I catch witch essentially closes the season for me on January 1.

Misty Grouper,yellowedge grouper,blue line tilefish,sand tilefish,snowy grouper,and golden tilefish no closed season.

If somebody else out there can state it in simple terms a simple person such as myself can understand, please take one step forward and let us know. As for the “Man” at the ramp, I don’t even want to imagine the confusion and arguments that might ensue. Seems like you have to bring a lawyer along with you to interpret the law. Have fun running to 400 feet to catch a single fish.

I caught a ride with Greg N on sat on his 26.5’ procat. Thanks for the ride Greg… The water really was good when we headed out around 7:30… had to steer around a hard rain but overall had a fun day. caught some nice bsb’s and 3 juvenile gags 22" for which we quickly released and got to see Jordan do a little spearfishing before we quit! lol good thing we do it legal we got checked twice!! Once near sullivans island and at the dock at remleys when we got back in!!! I didn’t see any of that rough water you guys are talkin about though???

Oh yeah and 10/31 midnight was it until spring on vermillions and as of right now grouper and snapper are still ok until 12/31/09 according to the wildlife officer that stopped us… unless it changes between now and then, changes are listed as pending!

you must have had blinders on sat show me some pictures of your trip

Enlighten a dummy. What is the difference between shallow water and deep water fish? Specifically wher you have the same fish in both. If none then it will be fun at the landing. But officer, I was in deep water. Can you prove this is a shallow water fish? I haven’t done much salt water fishing and sure as heck haven’t done any deep water stuff. I’m just a poor boy raised on Mobile Bay and in the rivers around it. You guys can talk fish and I can talk bout froggin and catchin small gators by hand.

open your eyes guys, there is a clear explination of what a shallow water grouper is.Its not where but what kind, there is more than one grouper.theres no mystery ,read.

I saw you guys at hadrells when they opened and I was standing on the dock waiting on my ride when you left. I think you left around 7:00 and we were about 30 minutes behind you... saw a cloud to the e northeast and a swell coming from the east but we took the southeast angle to the waves. biggest we saw was maybe a five footer or two... didn't catch anything worth mentioning other than some bsb's around 15" to 16" other than the gags that were too small...had to get em back in quickly or I would have taken pictures of them. The wind seemed to be fairly strong nearshore when we came back around 3:30 though
