OOOPS! on propeller replacement

I needed to replace the aluminum propeller on my 90 HP yamaha. Being a certified shade tree mechanic, I figured I could do this simple job myself. I ordered the replacement propeller from the internet. It came with a gearcase adapter ring. When I went to “snap” the ring into place on the forward end of the propeller, the ring broke. So now it is sitting in place on the propeller but the ring is separated about an eighth of an inch. Should I replace this ring? If so, where do I get just the ring? Can the propeller work OK without the gearcase adapter ring?? HELP! please…thanks.

i have no idea what a gearcase adapter ring is

Here’s an image of what I’m referring to.

What brand prop did you buy?? I think I’d be calling the seller.

If it broke just snapping it on, I imagine it would self-destruct on the first trip you used it.

It is an exhaust ring. OMC uses it on the renegade bass 4 blade prop. It would be a good idea to replace it just for the simple fact of fishing line getting around the prop shaft and eating the seal, you can still get line around it with any prop, but it is a good bit easier with a large gap. The only thing it should effect performance wise is how the boat plains out.

But the OMC ring locked in the gearcase and remained stationary, yours moves with the prop, but the same principal.

I now know what you are talking about
if you have to much gap, the prop will ventilate (suck exhaust air) and it will not perform properly
what brand of prop is this

I agree, Not having the exhaust diffuser in place will dirty up the water to much and cause slip.

it’s a Michigan Wheel “vortex”.

Thanks for everyone’s help.
I called the company, Advantage Discount boat propellers, and they’re shipping me a replacement ring next week. No questions asked!!.
