The BI-OP-SEA, a 59 ft Spencer yacht based out of Pirates Cove NC, is returning to Isla Mujeres Mexico for the 2011 sailfish season. Fishing was outstanding in 2010. We fished 33 days and released 855 sails for a 25 fish per day average. We had a large block of days open during the peak of fishing during February. If you don’t have a full group, we also have people looking to share the boat during this time. Check out our website for more details on the island, our boat, and the fishing.

How safe is that area? I have heard many bad things recently, and was under the impression that the State Department discouraged foreign vessels from traveling to Mexico. Can you enlighten us as to security detail for travel from airport to ferry and accomodations?

Oldschool, I went to Isla last Feb. and also worked in Mexico and South America a few times during the past year. Most of the issues in Mexico are in the north, but you are right, Mexico is having it’s crime/safety issues moreso than other Latin American countries right now. Isla is rather isolated, and I never felt unsafe there. All the marinas that I saw were gated w/guards - same for the hotels. We rented a house there and we had no safety issues. But just like anywhere in Latin America, its not Disneyworld USA, so keep your witts and your wallet close at hand.
Fished there last year with Bi-Op-Sea and caught a boat load. Isla is very safe as it is a small island with Ferries going to and from. It’s definitely safe enough to take the family to. Even outside the marina, the locals are very friendly. We walked around down town, and took golf carts all around the island. They even have a big Dolphin Discovery swim with the dolphins thing for the kids.
Had a blast in Isla last year. shot some great video of the sailfish underwater too.

Rob,
How the hell did you not get stabbed to death? You’re crazy!! But amazing video nonetheless.
