Operation Dry Water

Just saw this…sorry if it is a re-post.

Looks as though SC is participating…to what extent I don’t know.

My buddy from NC just told me about it this AM. Said the wildlife buddy of his told him they are planning to stop EVERY boat they see…sort of like a DUI checkpoints.

Not the weekend to enjoy your redneck champagne on the water if you’s gonna be the driver.

thanks for the headsup. been off the sauce pretty much since ive been a father but some of my buddies sure need to keep an eye out.

Good on them. The life they save might be someone one knows.

While I agree that boating while INTOXICATED is a problem…I would venture that selling a boat or PWC to someone who has little or no experience in the operation is MUCH more dangerous.

I read that 20% of boating accidents are related to alchohol. Simple math means that 80% are not. I would bet a nice chunk of that 80% is related to inexperience. Edit…sorry, re-read…that would be 21% of fatal boating accidents.

I guess it is just much easier to single out and fine those who choose to drink while on the water…as opposed to taking someone to court for being an idiot.

Again…I don’t condone drunk operation of anything, but why not concentrate on the causes of 4/5 of the accidents rather than singling out the 1/5 first?

I would be the very first to sign on for mandatory licensing of boat operators. If you can’t launch, retrieve, dock and don’t know the basic rules then you have no business being on the water.

agreed, fish. put inexpierence and alcohol together and disaster isnt far behind.

“I guess it is just much easier to single out and fine those who choose to drink while on the water…as opposed to taking someone to court for being an idiot.” Stupidity is much harder to prove in a courtroom. I would like to think that most of us are responsible boaters. But like anything else, there are those among us that keep more fish than we should, driver faster than we should or any other reckless behavior you wisj to bring up. Kudos to the LEOs for starting this type of program. Drinking alchohol while fishing is a choice. If you drink more than you should, then the result is on you. As it should be. Boating is not that much different than driving a car. Many that drink while on the water would never drink while driving and justify it by stating the obvious differences in the driving surfaces. However, you hit an object on the roadway, your car probably wont sink. It may still injure or kill other drivers. But imagine, if you will, the time difference in getting injured people to a medical facility on 526 verses 20 miles offshore.
