"operation dry water"

The Coast Guard is going to be helping our friends at DNR this weekend. I personally only drink when I am on anybody else’s boat. As cpt., on my boat, I don’t mess with adult beverages. There will be a lot of folks who do not play by my rules, and “The Man” will be out this weekend. He is your friend.
Please everyone respect other boaters and be careful!!

I know most people who will read this are responsible boaters. Just wanted to share my thoughts. Thanks.

I don’t advocate drinking and boating at all, but ocasionally I will have a beer while we are cruising up our creek. Is that legal, or would I be in big trouble for operating a vessel with a beer in my hand. Thought I saw DNR yesterday and it made me wonder. I would never drive the boat intoxicated. Once I get past my second one, my wife takes overm just to be safe!

having a beer is perfectly legal. being above a .08 and operating is not.
People dont realize that even if the person behind the wheel is sober, they need to know what they are doing.
For example, husband sees orange boat off in the distance coming towards them. Husband switches place with wife. Wife has no clue where she’s going or how to operate. if the husband is giving commands to the wife, i.e. pull the throttle this way, steer that way…technically he is still in control of the boat and can be cited.

be careful out there, a birdy told me that the emphasis to curb drunk boating has been taken up a few notches. dont boat intoxicated and you wont have any problems.

Thanks for the input, never thought of it like that. Luckily my wife is a very experienced boater (been on or near water all her life), but prefers to sit back and relax! I know a lot of people get behind the wheel and have no clue. I have also heard they are stepping it up, which is kind of why I was asking. Thanks again for the help.

I like a cold beer as much as anyone, but I never drink any acohol when I’m captain on my boat. It’s just to dangerous and there’s too much to lose. I’ll have one after I’m safely home and cleaning up the boat. Not preaching, but it just doesn’t make sense. :sunglasses:

i think the sober policy on the boat is defintely a good thing, but there are people out there who are just as dangerous if not more dangerous than an intoxicted person behind the wheel of the boat, cudos to the law enforcement to stepping up enforcemnt but there ought to be a boat driving test just like for driving a car

I hope this includes the lakes…

Spent 12 hrs on the water Saturday. Saw one police boat and it was heading ( I think) to the Whaler in distress off of Morris Island Light. Where was all the law enforcement?

Yea. Sorry 13.[:I] When I posted this I was thinking it was 7/4 weekend. “Operation Dry Water” is this weekend. They will be all over according to the story I saw on the news. Probably even see some police near the boat launches.

When I was still a Coastie a friend of mine asked me how to avoid being boarded.1…Don’t do something stupid. And 2 the more bikinis on a boat the higher the chance of getting boarded. Of course the higher the number of bikinis there are on any vessel is directly proportional to the amount of “stupidity” going on aboard that vessel.
