Opinion on casting finger guard

Why not just grab a pair of mechanix gloves at auto zone? They’re pretty durable and they’re cheap. You could wear just one of them. I think they’re thin enough you’d still have decent sensitivity at the fingertips. I use 65 lb power pro with a mono top shot. I use a 7 foot leader similar to walkmans when I fish the surf for sharks. I’ve never needed a glove when casting but I also wade out shoulders deep to cast my big baits because I fish with 7 foot boat rods.

Have you seen or considered a glove made for shooting a traditional bow? Has three fingers and strap. I have one I used for years. If it will holdup with a 50#+ draw recurve string on a bow it should be no problem with the fishing line. IMO

I always wondered about the Breakaway Cannons. SO you say if release is timed right they are good - if not timed right - you blue yonder your weight and bait?

This is what I was going to suggest.

Google “medical tube casting guard” should hopefully show you a better option. Been using technique for quite some time. Basically small hollow rubber tube that makes keeping thumb safe easy.

That’s where I got the idea, from the bow glove. As far as the cannon, yes if its timed right you can generate massive torque and power and the big plus is you don’t have to change your drag…and your right on the downside…sounds like a whip snapping, I have heard it twice :smiley:

What about Simms gloves?

Just made this tonight. I am trying something different with the quick clips.

Are those tactical angler clips? nice setup. let us know how it works.

Yes they are, I should have gone with the larger size as they are difficult to work with on the sinker. As far as how they work well great as a slide for the sinker, not so good for the hook on the solid steel line. The hook twisted off in the surf clip and all. …got it back at low tide though. #9786;

Walkman I don’t get how you are casting those 6-8 ft liters. Are you using the 15 ft pole you referred to earlier :question: When I rear back to cast with a 9’6 pole and a 3 ft mono red fishing leader, it almost touches the ground. Is that long leader laying on the beach when you cast?

Runbabyrun, I have tried that and it generates so much torque it burned a line in my finger. Like an easy cast I think they call it. I’m working on pendulum casting but instead of the swing going straight back the swing goes parallel to the beach and you then dip the rod tip down around and up if that makes sense. Otherwise I hold the rod so the line doesn’t touch the ground and use the push pull, or try to anyway…I’m tinkling of trying the mono topshot maybe 40 or 50# but I’m not sure if I should use mono or fluorocarbon though.

Yea, I use the standard push pull method and couldn’t figure out for the best of me how you cast that long liter. I’m trying to figure out the best method for casting a shark rig. With my standard way of casting ,a 6-8 ft liter doesn’t work. I did a little homework and looked at what FollyFisher used when he caught that tiger last year. I think he used 500 yds of 65 lb braid, with a top shot 10 feet long of 80lb mono ,tied together with an albright knot. Then a swivel outside of the eye and a heavy duty wire liter of 24 inches if I’m not mistaken ,don’t quote me on that. I’ll look up to make sure I remembered correctly. The 80 lb top shot guards against tail slaps and rub offs. It’s easy to cast because the you only have 24 inches of metal liter outside the eyes of the pole. Because your casting mono not braid you have no issues of it tearing up your hands. I’m going to try this one out. Any ways I hope you have a great year, good luck Walkman:smiley: I looked it up and that is what he used with a 12 ft ugly stick. 8000 size penn, size 12 circle hook.
