Opportunity to help research on pollutants in fish

I recently met with two people conducting a research study in conjunction with MUSC. They are studying what, if any, environmental pollutants are in fish caught in our local waterways. I donated a trout I caught to them. They need fish caught in specific locations for their study, and they will come to your house, boat landing, marina, etc to collect them.

Here is what they need.

Mullet, croaker, seatrout, redfish, flounder, whiting, spot

caught in the following locations

charleston harbor, ashley river, cooper river

They need to know for sure that the fish were caught in the unique body of water to be eligible.
They are not allowed to use social media to promote it.

They need the fish relatively quickly (in the next few weeks)
It would be great if CF.com nation could help them.

If you have fish to donate, please contact

You can throw it in the freezer whole, that is no problem.

Thanks!

Do they have a map showing the exact boundary of their areas? Is Pitt Street close enough to the harbor?
Do they want the fish frozen?

First, Most, Biggest
I want to catch them all

I’m sending in a trout I caught at castle Pinckney. In the freezer right now

GW just give them a call and I’m sure they can answer your question. Thanks

I would need to know what this study if for, who is paying for it, whats their motivation, what are they truly looking for?
The way I see it, nothing good can come from this study.
It’s not good for the Recreational fisherman, the economy, the SCDNR, local restaurants, fish markets, commercial fishing boats, shrimping boats, etc…
The only one who would benefit would be the people doing the study.

Not to fear monger, but this study could be far reaching and potentially hurt our local fishery.

I’m not in any way connected to this study. But I do eat a lot of fish caught locally. If there are pollutants in the fish that might affect my health or my family’s health, I’d like to know. I’d imagine that this could lead to better water quality in the (probably long term) future. Assuming we have a problem now. Maybe we do, maybe we don’t. But you don’t know unless you test for it. That’s the way I look at it.

If you call them, I’m sure they would answer your questions, BTW.

I guess with 3 superfund sites in Charleston County (SCD980711279 SCD980310239 SCD003360476) and 26 total for SC it’s important to get an occasional test.

I’m pretty sure Govt entities run their own tests. There are times when signs are posted at the ramps saying fish may contain heavy metals, and caution pregnant women, so someone must be testing.

Just asking others to be cautious of who your providing information to. Everyone has an agenda.

I understand where you’re coming from. I am paraphrasing a conversation with them, but part of this study is to also test frequent shore fisherpeople if you know what I mean, who eat fish as a very high percentage of their diet to see if there are traces in hair samples. There was a study done a few years ago where it was found micro plastics in shrimp (maybe? I can’t recall) or maybe oysters? Or maybe it was even dolphins. This is similar I think.

Would be interesting to see the results.
What I really want to know is how the upper cooper (above snowy point), Stono, Edisto, Wando, and ICW compare to the lower Cooper and Ashley.

I have joined a project with NOAA that test water quality and phytoplankton populations in the waters surrounding SC. I take my last class this weekend and am heading out to collect samples from different areas next week. I will post the results once everything is finalized.

Sorry, can’t participate. This study requires you to catch fish before you can participate. The way things have been going since the heat wave,I’m out!

What is life without adventure

Opti, my brother is working on the research right now with MUSC testing the microplastics in Shrimp. Are these 2 testing the fish linked to the same research group? Just curious.
