Oregon inlet 1/31- 21 ft sailfish

Finished up work at noon Monday, loaded up the boat, got lunch and hit the road at 2 pm. Made it to Nags Head at 10 pm. SW winds 5 knots… Sweet. Get up at 430 SW at 5 still. Alright let’s do it! Let’s get our bluefin! We made it from the fishing center to the bridge without tearing the foot off the motor and start through the inlet… Slick calm. Ran the 35 miles to the point in an hour and fifteen. Lines in at 7 am. 7:05 the left rigger pops the line comes tight but the drag doesn’t start screaming. Yellowfin? Nah a 15 lb dolphin. Lines back in and we start marking bluefin around 40 fathoms. Trilled that area for an hour and a half and finally the right rigger starts screaming. Unfortunately it stopped after ab 10 secs. We reeled in our first yellowfin ever! Trolled until 11 at which time it had started blowing 20 out the SW w 4-5ft swells. Fished our way northwest for a bit towards the inlet and had the bluefin swim right past the boat and rigtthrough our spread but no bites. We tried to fish back into the wind to stay in the area but it was just to sporty for us. Picked up and had a nice wet slow ride to the inlet. It was a long way for just two fish but that place is amazing. It was an awesome adventure and can’t wait til it calms down again so we can put our bluefin in the boat!

And I wanted to say thanks to the guys at Atlantic game and tackle for helping us out. I won’t be buying tackle from anyone else for a while.

Death wish

If the comedy channel on your XM goes out switch your VHF to 68.

Good to see ya’ll made the trip.
That neighborhood can get ‘more than sporty’.
Hope yas hook into something that takes 2+ to bring into the boat.

Yea it’s awesome up there. That was our second time out of there and both times were west winds. I think if we even felt it shift to any kind of east we would have to beat it back in. I def don’t wanna be one of the horror stories you hear about. But we are gonna hope that it gets right up there again soon so we can see if two people can get a bluefin over the side of her

It wil not be hard to pull a bluefin over the side. When both of you start pulling on 3 to 5 hundred pounds of fish from the side and a 4 or 5 ft. swell comes along it will just jump in the boat. Just hope it all stays afloat. Good Luck and just remember that inlet can make those in 50ft. boats hold their breath!!!

Be Safe Out There!!!
