We caught over a dozen amberjacks up to 50-60 lbs. Then decided to head north about 10 nm. I had rigged 2 ballyhoo, put them on the long riggers, as I was getting a naked one ready for the short the pin snapped. 2 anglers fought the fish for close to an hour, we even had the leader wrapped around the spool twice. Then she took a few spins, pulled the leader 10 feet off the rod tip and SNAP! We did see it, a bluefin close to 250 lbs, and I cant even explain how mad everyone is. Fun trip, but no meat.

haha, I forgot to add that the line was chaffed where it popped. I do believe we were using last years line.

Was it angler error, or was it up to someone else to change the line (reels owner) ? Sorry you all missed the fish!

so what even in fun fishing its all about the catch how could you be proud of something you reeled in for 30 min and handed the rod off to someone else. also you never know when you might catch a record and that would be shot then also

When you are in that postion feel free to fight the fish the entire time. If the men want to enjoy fighting a bluefin by passing the rod around, thats their right. No need for criticism.

I would have no regrets sharing the fight with my father. I can only bench press 135 lbs right now but I’m hoping to be strong enough to fight a big fish like that all by myself. One of these days…

When the tuna took the bait off the top of the water, the captain saw it… and knew that it wouldnt be a record. But patrick, maybe I can see if I can get you on a ride to go catch tuna and we will bring a video camera so you can show the world how extremely hardcore you are. Your not related to Tred Barta are you?

hey… just a thought, why don’t we all take a little time to exhale, we’ve become a nation of shallow breathers. as a casual charleston fishing visitor and avid fisher my take on this site is sometimes a bit polluted by snobby ass comments. if they want to share the rod thats their biz and we all got to walk our own path… try the positive out from time to time… and by the way can somebody please turn the wind machine down.
