Oregon inlet?

My buddy and I are planning a trip to Oregon inlet the next time it calms down… I heard all the roads are just about in order and the fishing is decent. Has anyone on ever fished out of there, and know a few spots we should try for the yellowfins?

Are you planing on takeing your own boat?Harry waters up there!Watch the weather! The cooler it gets the better the fishing, YF,BF and striper!

Yes taking our own boat… Kind of a scouting trip for our bluefin adventure in January!!!

Good luck with that this time of year! I would suggest you charter a boat instead of taking your own. That is one nasty inlet and I’ve been through it several times, but in charter boats. It’s not uncommon to see only a couple feet of water between your hull and the bottom. Besides, the charter captains know where to go to put you on the fish.

I drove up last year on a bluebird forecast. Had dinner, went to bed and woke up to the windows rattling in my hotel window @ 3AM- Gale Warning, blowing 40 kts.

Remember the inlet is not a jetty inlet like Charleston. Once your go under the bridge the channel snakes its way out into the ocean instead of straight out. Take a look at www.tidalfish.com in the midatlantic offshore section for some reports. Follow the fleet out of the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center or Pirates Cove. Follow the fleet on the sound side too. Better yet, just follow the fleet to learn your navagational way. Fun place to fish. If the weather turns bad go sight seeing. Leave some time to visit the custom boat builders shops. They are amazing and are really good about letting you take some close looks at what they have under construction.

I second loose wire!!! VERY VERY hairy inlet!! Like the stono Times a hundred!! Insane Went out on the finseeker earlier this year!! Great trip but almost didnt get to make it out!! Good luck either way and be safe!!

Thanks guys! We are definitely experienced on the water and have pretty nice stuff. We are planning on putting in at the fishing center and folowing some one out and looking for it to be light W to SW winds for atleast 24 hrs after we are supposed to make it back in. Can anyone tell us how far it is to the fishing grounds from the inlet?

Last time I fished out of manteo we ran out 40-45 miles. As others have already said, follow someone who knows where they are going. It’s very different there than it is here.

It varies. The fish may be south around Hatteras or maybe at the Point. It will be 30 miles minimum and maybe up to 45 if the Capt. will burn the fuel.

You need to watch the SW as well. Once you get past the lee of Cape Hatteras a SW will put a damper in your day.

Oregon Inlet bound suckas!

Anything to report?

Well we made the ride knowing that the bite had turned off a little bit… Made it out the inlet with out messing up my britches and headed south. Fished all day for 2 bites. A 40 lb wahoo and a nice dolphin. We only saw one of the charter boats out of the fishing center catch a wahoo right after ours and everyone on the radio was disappointed. I checked the report from Oregon inlet fishing center today and the bite has turned back on… That was one expensive wahoo!
