Orvis Bar Stock Reel

Picked up a 4wt Orvis Bar Stock last night for a trout/bluegill rig. I am an inshore saltwater guy and no nothing about trout fishing freshwater. Is this a decent reel? I didn’t want to break the bank on something for small fish in freshwater.

Thanks for any input

for what your gonna do, yes. my only problem with their reels (at least my older battenkill) is with smaller dia lines (2-4wt) the line would find its way behind the spool via the space b/w spool and reel. it will ruin line with a quickness. it is a solid reel that takes alotta bangs and bumbs and still sings purty!

Jay, a 4wt fly reel is really for storing fly line. You don’t need the drag of a saltwater reel since you use your palm to apply any “drag” you will need directly to the spool and the reel isn’t subject to those burning runs that you have in the salt simply because in a small to mid size trout stream, there just isn’t much room for them to run on you. The rod is where you want to spend the money.

I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once, as I ever was.

Jay, reel should be more than adequate, if you get a wild hair and use it for ladyfish this summer (recommended), just put it in a toilet reservoir for a few days and it should get a good rinsing…

I’ve never been a big fan of Orvis Reels, why they make some good stuff, it’s pricy and they change their models way to often. When I buy a fly reel, I look more as an investment and expect to use it for a long, long time. If I need an extra spool, spare part or another reel I want to be able to pick one up when ever and where ever I happen to be fihsing. If the colmpany nolong offers or supports that model, you’re screwed!
